Today’s Throwback - Alpina B6 2.8/2

Recently imported from Japan, this Alpina B6 2.8/2 is a highly exclusive, hand-finished performance car based on the BMW E36 3 Series platform. Produced by the legendary German manufacturer Alpina between March 1991 and July 1993, it served as a sophisticated, high-performance alternative before the factory E36 M3 reached many global markets. This is car 162, with a full toolkit, and it’s an absolute time capsule.

We are here today for the sound system, and what a beauty she is. I haven’t heard an old-school system like this for a while. The treble was a little bright for me, but that was made up for by the smooth, rolling bass provided by those Phase Linear Aliante subwoofers mounted in Free-Air.

So what was it there?
The system starts with the Very Beautiful Alpine 7909J, which feeds into an Alpine PXA-H600 processor with an Alpine RUA-4260 controller; there is a Panasonic CN-DV255 in-dash DVD navigation and multimedia head unit with a motorised flip-out screen. The cabin speakers were Mac Audio 3-way custom-fit in the front and 2-way components in the rear. Amplification was done by Alpine, with an MRV-F400 running the cabin speakers and an MRV-1000 running the Stunning Phase Linear Aliante subwoofers.

Altogether, a very special motorcar, with a very special sound system, lovely to see.
