You never know who you'll run into at Infosec Europe!

Our Managing Director, Tony Wilson, recently attended the event and had an unexpected reunion with one of our trusted partners, Andrew Mills - not in a meeting room or on the exhibition floor, but on the sun deck of a super-yacht.

As Tony put it:
"I never quite know what to expect from visiting security events - but meeting up with a trusted partner on the sun deck of a super-yacht wasn't on my Infosec Europe bingo card!"

It's always great to catch up with valued partners, share insights, and strengthen the relationships that help us deliver the best outcomes for our clients.

We've recently seen increasing reports across social media of shoppers receiving suspicious parking charge notices claiming they owe substantial sums of money for parking at supermarket car parks.

One of our own team members, Abbey, recently received a letter demanding payment of ÂŁ170. The letter stated that multiple previous notices had been sent and that the opportunity to appeal had expired. Abbey had never received any previous correspondence.

Fortunately, she recognised several warning signs that suggested the letter may not be legitimate:
▪️Multiple spelling and grammatical errors
▪️Requests for payment via a QR code
▪️Claims that the appeal process was no longer available
▪️Vague company details and limited contact information
▪️Pressure to make immediate payment

These tactics are commonly used by scammers to create urgency and encourage victims to act before they have time to verify the information.

Before making any payment:
▪️Check the company details carefully
▪️Confirm that the contact information is legitimate
▪️Be cautious when scanning QR codes or following payment links
▪️Contact the supermarket or landowner directly if you are unsure

Cyber security isn't just about emails, passwords and malware. Criminals are increasingly using a combination of physical mail, QR codes and social engineering techniques to target individuals.

Stay vigilant, stay informed, and always verify before you pay.

🚨 Cyber security isn't just an IT issue - it's a people issue too

Despite cyber threats continuing to rise, only 19% of UK businesses have provided staff cyber security awareness training in the last year.
That's concerning when:

▪️More than 90% of successful cyber-attacks start with a phishing email
▪️Around 2 million UK small businesses provide no cyber security training at all, despite 42% experiencing breaches or attacks
▪️Only 6-12% of UK businesses hold or are aware of the Cyber Essentials scheme

The reality is that a lot of cyber incidents aren't caused by sophisticated hackers breaking through firewalls. They're caused by everyday human mistakes:

❌ Clicking phishing links
❌ Using weak or reused passwords
❌ Sharing sensitive information without verification
❌ Bypassing security procedures to save time
❌ Falling victim to social engineering tactics

Policy breaches are not always malicious. They happen because employees are busy, distracted, under pressure, or simply haven't been given the knowledge to spot and avoid threats.

Investing in your people is one of the most effective ways to reduce cyber risk, improve compliance, and build a stronger security culture.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Leon Brew from Keswick School Sixth Form for work experience with our team. This was Leon’s second time visiting us, having previously completed work experience a couple of years ago, and it’s been fantastic to see how much his knowledge and confidence have grown since then.👏

During the week, Leon gained hands-on insight into areas including vulnerability scanning, the importance of MFA, and operational processes within cyber security.

Leon shared:
“Overall I learned a lot about the process of Cyber Essentials and cyber security, from how to test open ports to the roles of employees and how certain tasks are so important for businesses.”

Leon is hoping to pursue a career in cyber security through an apprenticeship pathway, and we have no doubt he has a bright future ahead in the industry.

It was great working with Leon last week, and we wish him all the very best for the future - we know he’ll continue to exceed expectations! 🌟
