A "triggering apparatus for an inflation process in a bag" – that was the wording in a patent for which we applied for in the spring of 1976. This apparatus, known as the airbag control unit, is essential in triggering a car's airbag precisely at the right time. In 1980, when we started the series production of this electronic control unit, an acceleration sensor and multiple application-specific circuits were used to reliably tell apart an actual accident from, for example, the impact of a pothole. Today, our airbag control unit is in its 12th generation and analyzes reports from as many as 18 external acceleration and pressure sensors and controls up to 48 restraints.
