Last month, Aaron Grantham from our Commercial Operations team and James Penny, our Head of Education Strategy, joined HP at Silverstone for a fantastic day with one of our customers, Greenwood Academies Trust (G*T).

HP brought G*T students together with the MB Motorsport race team. Working in teams, the students took on the challenge of designing their own race team of the future.

The day showed how much of motorsport depends on science, technology, engineering and maths. It also opened students' eyes to the wide range of careers the industry has to offer.

It was great to spend time with G*T's senior leadership team and the HP team away from the day-to-day. Thank you to HP & G*T for the invitation and for creating such an inspiring experience for the students.

Schools are being told to write their own AI strategies.

Most have not been given a starting point.

A new report from Sir Anthony Seldon and Tim Bunting describes AI's arrival in schools as "chaotic and anarchic" and says schools are crying out for government guidance.

It calls for every school and college to have its own AI strategy by September next year, with Ofsted assessing how well it has been implemented.

Here is the uncomfortable part.

AI readiness is not really an AI problem. It is a foundations problem.

Safe AI use depends on knowing where your data sits, who can access it, how it is governed and whether your network and cyber posture would survive proper scrutiny.

A school with an insecure network does not need an AI strategy yet. It needs the groundwork first.

Three questions worth putting to your next SLT meeting:

- What are we actually required to meet across the DfE digital and technology standards?
- Where are the real gaps, and which ones matter right now?
- What would we show an inspector tomorrow if they asked?

If the honest answer to number three is "a spreadsheet someone updates once a year", that is your starting point.

That is the work we do with schools and trusts. Get a clear, evidenced picture of where you actually stand, then build the strategy on top of it rather than in front of it.

Twenty-one years working only in education. Foundations first, then strategy.

AI Awareness Day is this Thursday (4th June), and we've put together a free resource guide for our schools.

It's got everything you need to actually do something on the day, without spending hours searching for it yourself. There are live streams you can drop into across the school day, classroom activities and lesson starters for ages 3 to 18, resources for parents, and a full set of teacher guidance, including the DfE's own frameworks.
