Business moving day

Boxes packed.

Desks dismantled.

Keys collected.

Staff ready.

New broadband installation date:

Three weeks from Tuesday.

😬

Connectivity isn't the glamorous part of moving premises, so it often gets left surprisingly late.

Before committing to a move, check what broadband is available and how long it will take to install.

Because “we'll just hotspot for a few days” becomes significantly less charming by day nine.

Not everything needs replacing

We sell telecoms.

Which occasionally means telling somebody:

“I wouldn't change that.”

Because if something works well, costs a sensible amount and does what the business needs, moving it just so somebody can sell you something shiny isn't particularly helpful.

Sometimes the best telecoms recommendation is:

Leave that bit alone.

Fix the thing that actually needs fixing.

“Please hold while I transfer you…”

A sentence with enormous potential.

Sometimes you get transferred beautifully.

Sometimes you get cut off.

Sometimes you arrive back with the same person who transferred you.

And occasionally you disappear into an entirely different dimension.

Call routing doesn't need to be complicated.

But it does need to reflect how your business actually works now.

Not how it worked when the phone system was installed.

. One of our favourite telecoms questions:

“Why are we still paying for this?”

Sometimes there is a perfectly good answer.

Sometimes there absolutely isn't.

Businesses change much faster than telecoms contracts do.

People leave.

Sites close.

Numbers stop being used.

Old services survive because nobody wants to touch them in case something explodes.

A periodic tidy-up can be surprisingly satisfying.

Especially when it reduces the bill.

Nobody misses the backup connection until...
..the card machine stops.

And the phones stop.

And Teams stops.

And somebody suddenly remembers:

“Didn't we have a 4G backup thing?”

Yes.

Possibly.

Somewhere.

Maybe in that cupboard.

Resilience is much less useful if nobody knows whether it actually works.

If your main broadband vanished this afternoon, do you know what would happen next?

The broadband is down 😱

Except sometimes...

The broadband is absolutely fine.

The Wi-Fi isn't.

Or one laptop isn't.

Or DNS isn't.

Or one particular application has decided today is the day it no longer wants to cooperate.

We see this surprisingly often.

The quickest way to waste time on a fault is to decide what the problem is before you've worked out what the problem is.

Troubleshooting first.

Panicking second.

There is almost certainly a business somewhere paying £18 a month for a SIM nobody can identify.

Possibly several.

It belonged to Dave.

Or the old tablet.

Or the tracking device.

Or possibly nobody has the faintest idea anymore.

Business mobile estates accumulate slowly enough that nobody notices.

Until somebody finally looks at the bill and says:

“Who on earth is 07###…?”

Worth checking.

When was the last time you actually rang your own main number?

Not from your desk phone.

From a mobile, as though you were a customer.

You may discover:

an out-of-hours message from 2022
an option for a department that no longer exists
a voicemail nobody checks
a call route that eventually disappears into the abyss

Phone systems are very good at quietly continuing to do exactly what they were told to do years ago.

Unfortunately, businesses have a habit of changing in the meantime.

Try it today. You might be surprised.

Broadband and Wi-Fi are often treated as the same thing, but they are different parts of the setup.

Broadband is the connection arriving at your premises. Wi-Fi is how that connection is distributed wirelessly around the building.

That means you can have a perfectly healthy broadband line and still experience slow speeds, dropouts or unreliable calls because the wireless coverage is weak, obstructed or overloaded.

Before changing the broadband service, it is worth checking where the problem actually sits. The right fix may be better Wi-Fi coverage, repositioned equipment or a properly designed access-point setup rather than a different line.

The Calls Warehouse can review both the incoming connection and the in-building coverage, then recommend a proportionate fix based on what is actually causing the problem.

“A backup SIM will keep everything working.” Myth or reality?

Myth, unless the setup has been designed and configured for it.

A mobile backup can provide an alternative internet connection when the primary service fails, but that does not mean every device or system will automatically switch across. The router must support failover, the backup needs to be configured correctly, and the mobile connection must have enough capacity for the services you expect it to carry.

It is also worth deciding what genuinely needs to remain available. Keeping card payments and essential calls working may require a very different setup from trying to maintain every cloud application, camera and connected device at full capacity.

The Calls Warehouse can review what needs protecting and help match the backup arrangement to the actual business requirement.
