Every June, Aphasia Awareness Month shines a light on a condition that affects millions of people worldwide - yet awareness of aphasia is still low, and it’s often not well known or recognised.

Aphasia can change how someone communicates, but it doesn’t change what they want to say.

This month, we’re sharing clinical insights, practical guidance and real experiences to help build understanding and support communication in different ways - including how AAC can help.

Shane’s AAC device gives him a way to share his thoughts, join conversations, build relationships and, from time to time, let everyone know exactly what he thinks about Liverpool! ⚽

It’s wonderful to see AAC supporting meaningful communication and helping others learn more about the many different ways people express themselves.

A big shout out to Bláithín from the Western Health and Social Care Trust, and thank you to the Tuned In Project - TIP for sharing this fantastic video and helping raise awareness of AAC.

“People often assume that people with cerebral palsy have cognitive issues because we can’t speak or have difficulty speaking. We can communicate – it’s just more sophisticated.”

Max is a para athlete, researcher and AAC user from Australia who communicates using a Grid Pad 13 with eye gaze.

In our latest story, he shares his experiences of sport, communication, inclusion and how AAC has supported him to compete, collaborate and be heard - from Boccia and Frame Running to research and public speaking.
