Thursday thought 💡

How did we get to work never actually ending?

Let me explain...

Maybe I'm showing my age, but years ago when you left the office that was it until the next day.

Now work sort of just follows us around.

A quick Teams message at 8pm.
Replying to emails while watching TV.
Checking one thing on your phone.
“Just quickly” looking at tomorrow’s calendar.

Modern work has become a constant low-level background process.

And what's weird is we barely notice we’re doing it anymore.

Tbh I don't think technology created the problem entirely.

I think it just made it easier for businesses to slowly remove the natural stopping points people used to have.

What do you think, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts?

⚠️ Tuesday Tech Tip ⚠️

If you’re an accountant with lots of browser tabs open all day, this one is for you.

Most people know Ctrl + Shift + T reopens a closed browser tab. (Or maybe not!)

What a lot of people don’t realise is you can keep pressing it.

So if you accidentally close:

one tab
five tabs
or an entire browser window full of client work...

you can usually bring the whole lot back in the order they were closed.

Works in:

Chrome
Edge
Firefox
and most modern browsers..

One of those tiny things that can save a surprising amount of stress at 4:55pm on a Friday. 😍

Saturday update 💭

The lawn reseeding project is actually starting to work.

Which is oddly exciting for something that basically involves staring at grass waiting for it to become slightly more grass. 🤣

A couple of weeks ago some areas were just dirt patches covered in seed and optimism.

Now there’s proper new growth coming through and it’s surprisingly satisfying seeing it slowly fill back in.

Still patchy in places, but definitely getting there. Yes it needs mowing, just a few more days...

I think one of the more rewarding parts of anything long-term is finally seeing visible progress after a period where it felt like absolutely nothing was happening.

Even if it is just grass!

Thursday thought 💡

Do you ever notice how businesses slowly build systems around problems instead of fixing the original problem?

Someone can’t access a file properly, so a shared folder gets created.

Then another.

Then permissions get widened because “Dave needs access while Sarah’s off”.

Then people start emailing documents to themselves because the VPN is unreliable on Fridays.

Then somebody creates a spreadsheet to track which spreadsheet is the right spreadsheet!

And eventually the workaround becomes the actual process.

How many of these do you see where you work?

Or have “heard about”, obviously 👀

Would genuinely love to hear some real-world examples.

Saturday thought 💭

I’ve spent part of this week reseeding patches of lawn.

Very optimistic hobby, lawn repair.

You throw seed onto what currently looks like dirt and just trust the process for several weeks.

Some patches come through perfectly.
Others apparently decide they’d rather remain mud.

Tbh it’s surprisingly similar to running a business.
You can do all the right things and still end up with patchy results in places.

Then you try again.

⚠️ Quick IT Tip ⚠️

Is your laptop battery running out faster than it should? It's actually very common.

Here's a few really easy things you can try.

1. Restart it. Start > Restart. (Apple Logo > Restart).

Not shutdown, not closing the lid. Processes build up over time, and these can really slow down your device, especially if it’s older.

2. Fully charge the battery, then unplug the power and almost fully discharge the battery (down to 1-5%) Repeat this 3 times. This is a non-technical way to recalibrate the battery. Over time they forget how much charge they hold.

3. Don’t leave the power in 24/7. Even on newer laptops with trickle charge and other systems leaving it plugged in the whole time will lower battery life.

Hopefully these will help someone. If your staff are always fighting poor battery life it might be a sign you need a hardware audit.

Small Microsoft 365 issues don’t usually cause problems straight away.

Everything seems fine until it isn’t.

Even tech‑savvy business owners can lose hours dealing with settings that were “working for now” permissions, syncing, file access, security.

This quick breakdown shows why having things set up properly before problems appear makes such a difference.

⚠️ Quick IT Tip ⚠️

Do you know how to take a quick screenshot without messing around?

I still see people grabbing their phone to take a picture of their screen.

You don’t need to.

On Windows:

Press Windows + Shift + S
Drag to select what you want
It’s copied straight to your clipboard
Paste it into an email or Teams

On Mac:

Press Cmd + Shift + 4
Drag to select the area
It saves automatically

It’s quicker, clearer, and easier to share.

If all your systems have MFA enabled, would you assume your passwords don’t really matter anymore?

Most businesses do.

And to be fair, MFA does a lot of the heavy lifting now.

But here’s what it doesn’t tell you.

Whether your staff are reusing passwords that have already been exposed somewhere else.

This is more common than people think. A password gets used on a random site, that site gets breached, and the credentials end up in a dataset that gets passed around.

Nothing happens straight away.

But it’s still a signal.

It tells you how people are behaving with passwords. It shows where risk is building quietly in the background. And it highlights accounts that might become a problem if something else slips, like MFA gaps or phishing.

Dark web monitoring isn’t about panic. It’s about visibility.

It’s a way of spotting weak habits early, rather than waiting for something to go wrong.

If you’ve never looked at this alongside your MFA setup, it’s probably worth doing. We can run a check and show you exactly what’s associated with your domain.

⚠️ Quick IT Tip ⚠️

Do you know you can pin your most-used folders so you don’t have to keep finding them?

Well you don't need to, and this very quick and simple tip will help (if you don't know already!)

On Windows:

Open File Explorer
Find the folder you use often
Right-click it → Pin to Quick Access

It will then sit on the left-hand side permanently. (You can right-click it to remove)

On Mac:

Open Finder
Drag the folder into the Favourites section

That’s it. Hope it helps someone 😀
