PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) is due to reach the end of its life in December 2025. From this date any services on WLR, including Single Analogue Lines, Multi-Lines, ISDN2 and ISDN30, will need to move to alternative products.

The PSTN switch off will also effect broadband customers as both ADSL and FTTC run over Single Analogue Lines, customers with these services will need to move to a single order variant broadband.

As part of the switch off journey from the start of September, there will be a nationwide stop sell of WLR, below is a summary of what this covers:

• Installation of new PSTN/ISDN lines
• Working line takeovers
• Standard line transfer orders
• Add or amend single lines, multi-lines or ISDN’s
• Add or amend DDI ranges
• Restarting of stopped lines
• Adding Broadband to voice lines
• Changes to bandwidth
• Migrating to non-ultrafast products

At TelcoNet, we have a range of products and solutions to meet all of our customers’ requirements to enable a smooth migration away from PSTN products and services. To find out how we can support your business please contact us at 01628 951977 or visit www.telconet.co.uk.

The UK government has launched a new Wireless Infrastructure Strategy aimed at delivering 5G connectivity to all populated areas by 2030, as well as investing in the next generation of connectivity.

Key measures in the strategy include a new ambition of nationwide coverage of standalone 5G by 2030, as the government aims to extend 4G coverage to 95 percent of the population. The government will also provide Ā£40m of funding to establish at least eight ā€˜5G Innovation Regions’ across the UK.

Openreach has now made its ultrafast, ultra-reliable Full-Fibre broadband network available to 10 million homes, businesses, and public services.

The roll-out of Full-Fibre broadband across the country is part of an ambitious £15bn infrastructure project to provide reliable, fast broadband that meets the needs of modern life.

Since the pandemic, the UK’s internet usage has soared, doubling in 2020 and increasing year on year with more data downloaded last year than ever before. The rise in usage is set to continue as technology becomes more sophisticated and integral to people’s daily lives, with social changes such as working from home and the boom in online learning.

Mobile internet access continues to grow across the London Underground, as Archway and Tufnell Park on the Northern Line have become the latest London Underground stations to receive 5G. These stations join Notting Hill Gate station, as well as the tunnels from Holland Park to Queensway on the Central Line, where 5G is already available. Further stations are due to go live in the coming months.

With its much higher speeds and lower latency (the time it takes it to connect), 5G is perfect for customers who want to download box sets, movies or work documents, no matter how busy or crowded the stations get.

SoGEA (Single-order Generic Ethernet Access) is a dedicated line that delivers a broadband connection and includes an underlying version of a phone line. This means that customers moving to SoGEA from a phoneline-reliant broadband solution will need a voice call service that uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to continue to be able to make and receive phone calls.

SoGEA reduces monthly costs, as it means customers are only paying for a broadband data connection, monthly costs will decrease because a landline cost is no longer included. As well as this, SoGEA offers increased reliability, as there are no phone line frequencies being used, the chance of interference or an unstable connection is lower.

VoIP migration

As technology continues to evolve, many businesses are faced with the decision to upgrade their existing PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and ISDN (integrated service digital network) copper network to a more modern and reliable solution. While ISDN and PSTN were groundbreaking at the time, these have since been superseded by new technologies – ones that can deliver the volume and quality of voice data needed today.

VoIP is a very well-known and popular telephone system for businesses looking to upgrade from ISDN. It’s a viable alternative for several reasons. To start, it gives your business a great service without any of the on-premises hardware required by traditional telephony. It’s also extremely easy to scale up or down as your company grows or needs to meet demand. Additionally, there are no geographical restrictions which means your employees can have the same user experience no matter where they are in the world – on any device.

FTTP

The UK has seen significant developments in the implementation of fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology in recent years. FTTP, also known as ultrafast full-fibre broadband, involves laying fibre optic cables directly from the broadband exchange straight into your building. FTTP ultimately provides users with faster internet speeds and more reliable connectivity than traditional copper-based broadband connections.

In the UK, the development of FTTP has been driven by several factors, including government investment, private sector competition, and changing consumer demand. The government has set a target of providing full-fibre broadband to all homes and businesses in the UK by 2025 and has committed significant funding to support the rollout of this technology.
