📸 FlySpot of the Month

This month's featured shot comes from James Rabkin, proving that a great drone photograph doesn’t need to be complicated. Beautifully composed, wonderfully calm and with just enough morning mist to add atmosphere, this simple scene really stood out to us.

FlySpots is one of the newest features in Drone Companion, making it easy to discover great places to fly and share your own favourite spots with the community. Upload a drone photo and, in most cases, Drone Companion automatically reads the GPS data and places it on the map for you. Simple.

Everyone can explore FlySpots for free, and subscribers can add their own.

Need to speak to ATC to gain authorisation for a flight?

“I’m in the field to the left…” probably isn’t going to help much 😅

Now you can tap the exact spot on the Drone Companion Safety Map and copy or relay the coordinates straight over, making it much easier to tell ATC exactly where you’re planning to operate.

You can also download a Flight Planning Snapshot showing the airspace, restrictions, NOTAMs, weather and even nearby low-flying aircraft displayed for that point.

It doesn’t replace ATC authorisation or your official checks. It just makes the whole conversation a lot easier.

Drone Companion gives you the Best Settings for your drone, your shot and the conditions. But until now, you needed an internet connection to use it.

And some of the best places to fly don’t exactly come with great phone signal - So we’ve changed that.

Our new Offline Reference Pack is now live, letting you download the useful parts of Drone Companion before you head out and take them with you offline.

You can still access your Best Settings, work out the right ND filter for your drone and conditions, view saved drone profiles, use your pre-flight checklist and calculators, and browse the Knowledge Centre and Flight School, all without a signal.

Of course, without an internet connection we can’t give you current weather, NOTAMs, aircraft activity or an up to date Safety Map, and neither can any other app. Live information needs a live connection, and we’re not going to show you old safety data and pretend otherwise.

So if you’re heading somewhere remote, download the pack before you go and take the useful parts of Drone Companion with you.

We apologise for spamming you with two posts in two days however the bosses have informed marketing that adding ADS-B aircraft to the Safety Map is apparently something we should tell people about.

You can now see available aircraft activity below 3,000ft alongside NOTAMs, restrictions and ground hazards in Drone Companion.

The 400ft / 120m ceiling helps keep drones separated from manned aviation, but helicopters and light aircraft can still operate low. Even outside an FRZ, aircraft can be on approach or departure at relatively low altitude.

It doesn’t replace keeping a lookout and not every aircraft broadcasts ADS-B and of course this can be toggled on and off in our safety map menu.

We know how important safety is when flying drones, so we hope this gives you another useful piece of information before you take off.

Summer means more bright days, more flying and a good chance you’ll be reaching for an ND filter.

The problem is, a lot of the AI generated cheat sheets doing the rounds make it sound as simple as “sunny day = ND32”.

It doesn’t really work like that. Different drones use different cameras and apertures, so the right ND filter can vary even under the same lighting conditions.

Get it wrong and you either waste time bringing the drone back to swap filters, end up with underexposed footage or blow the footage out.

That’s why we built the ND Filter Calculator into Drone Companion. It takes the drone you’re using into account when making its recommendation. Or, if you want a more detailed answer, just ask Ask Drone Companion.
