This is Seize the Awkward .

-

The American Foundation for Su***de Prevention (AFSP), Ad Council, and The Jed Foundation (JED) have launched the su***de prevention campaign Seize the Awkward. This national public service campaign aims to empower teens and young adults to reach out to friends with mental health issues who may be at risk for su***de.

-

Seize the Awkward talks about serious matters, like depression and su***de, in an upbeat and almost humorous way to help drive an honest, “friend to a friend”, positive and hopeful take on opening up to discuss what is inarguably a very personal and difficult secret for most people.

-

Seize the Awkward have partnered with Hannah Hart (and several other online creators) through the Ad Council to “bring the awkward” through her story and honest heart-to-heart take on how to approach a loved one about their depression and anxieties.

-

As the world observes ***depreventionday (Sept. 10), we urge everyone to participate and , before its too late. Seize that awkward and break that silence.

-

If you, dear reader, personally need help and feel the silence unbearable - call a loved one, or even call your local help line.
You are missed. You are needed. You matter.

-

The Ad Council ‘s Creators for Good project connects Talent to Social Causes. Creators for Good empowers influencers, celebrities, musicians and athletes to bring awareness and impact to causes that they care about. Through their partnership with the Ad Council, talent develops authentic and personal content across their digital platforms and serves as issue and cause ambassadors for their chosen and personal campaign. In their own voice, style, and platform, talent is making a meaningful difference on issues such as Su***de Prevention, Bullying Prevention, Breast Cancer Risk Education, Meals on Wheels Volunteer Recruitment and Job Training and Employment at Goodwill, to name just a few.

This is The Real Action Foundation [ Real Action ] and their Butterfly Effect Project.

———————

What is Real Action?
Real Action is an independent, community-led, specialist educational charity. With a history extending back to the mid-1990s, Real Action was set up by members of the community it serves.

-

They are renowned for their projects, providing fast-acting, effective courses of basic education, especially in literacy for children and adults, and English language. These transform the prospects of people living in underprivileged communities.

-

Their Vision: The Right to Read, The Right to Know.

-

“This is what we envisage: no child, of any background, should be educationally doomed. On the contrary, they should be educationally empowered. We believe all children have the right to read. Indeed we can demonstrate that, with our Butterfly literacy teaching, virtually all can gain mastery of literacy.”

-

Year after year they provide evidence that suggests that 'disadvantaged' children need not be educationally outperformed by their non-'disadvantaged' peers. In fact they find that the opposite can occur.

-

“Our vision is positive. It overturns national assumptions.”

-

Their centre of operations is the Learning Store in north Westminster, while their Saturday Butterfly classes take place nearby.

“While we do our good works let us not forget that the real solution lies in a world in which charity will have become unnecessary.” ― Chinua Achebe, Anthills of the Savannah

————————

Anthills of the Savannah is a chronicle of continuous struggle by the people to overcome a history of suffering brought about by bad government. A typical confirmation of this fact is that the novel begins with a coup and ends with another coup.

-

The internationally acclaimed Nigerian author Chinua Achebe’s novel Anthills of the Savannah (1987) is set in the fictional West-African country Kangan in the post-colonial 1960s. Echoing the real political breakdown, several violent coups, and an ethnic cleansing campaign again the Igbo people in 1960s Nigeria, Anthills of the Savannah describes the aftermath of a military coup in Kangan. The novel focuses on the last days in the lives of the newly installed military dictator, Sam, and his two friends: Chris, who becomes a member of the cabinet, and Ikem, an outspoken journalist.

-

Chinua Achebe (born Albert Chinụalụmọgụ Achebe, 16 November 1930 – 21 March 2013) was a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and critic. His first novel Things Fall Apart (1958), often considered his best, is the most widely read book in modern African literature. He won the Man Booker International Prize in 2007.

“Twitterkids is an idea I came up with while teaching ESL in Spanish Harlem, to middle schoolers in 2007. One of the reasons social media worked so well was because it was another way for my students to express themselves in English and communicate with other people around the world. So I adapted the curriculum I used with my students in NYC for the students in Tanzania. In October 2009 AJ and I partnered with Epic Change to write the curriculum for a 2 week period to introduce fifth graders in Arusha, Tanzania to new media. New media is helpful in many ways, but the primary benefit is the ability to communicate our thoughts and ideas to the world. Why shouldn’t we use these tools to teach students?”

“I wanted to create a platform that addresses the issues of digital rights, internet governance, and online violence against women. The main objective of DRF was not to just establish another NGO, but to really start a movement on digital rights and internet freedom issues. I live in a country where you never know when or why the government will ban something on the internet. Another objective of DRF was to give a platform to women leaders so they can reclaim the leadership space in the internet freedom community as well. These ideas were in my head and I wanted to give life to them.”

——————————

Snapstory’s brings us face to face with cyber bullying and the one woman fighting the fight for women’s rights in Pakistan.

-

Meet Nighat Dad and Hivos.org. (.daad) (Hivos).

-

Nighat Dad is a Pakistani lawyer and Internet activist who runs the not-for-profit organisation Digital Rights Foundation.

-

DRF is a research based advocacy organization focusing on ICTs to support Human Rights, democracy and digital governance. They aim at empowering the community, especially women and girls through ICT education and positive development.

-

DRF envisions a world where all people, especially women and girls, are able to enjoy a free internet, exercising their rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and privacy fully.

-

The first campaign of DRF, Hamara Internet, was launched in 2014 to provide women and girls with knowledge and tools to protect their online freedom of expression. Hamara Internet was a project funded by Making All Voices Count – a five-year international program co-implemented by Hivos that funded new ideas to amplify the voices of citizens. In 2016, Nighat won the Human Rights Tulip award, an annual prize awarded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The prize money allowed Nighat to start a cyber harassment helpline. Hivos’ Digital Defenders Partnership (DDP) has supported the helpline since its inception.
