As Businesses look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and make themselves more sustainable the circular economy is becoming more popular.

It's such an old idea that we probably berated our elderly relatives for. Remember those cupboards full of saved butter tubs, jam jars and flattened out tin foil at your Grandparents? Well it seems they knew the value of reducing, reusing, recycling and making things last as long as possible.

This idea is really gaining traction in the business community and it couldn't come at a better time. The World Business Forum reports that 50 million tons of electrical and electronic waste are dumped into the environment every year and this will rise to 120 million tons by 2050 if we don't get a grasp on it.

When companies implement the circular community for their IT equipment effectively they’re able to maximise their products life and really get value for money. Circular Economy can involve buying, selling, and donating used servers, PCs, and peripherals. It also can focus on refurbishing and repairing existing gear to eke out this longer lifespan.

In fact, “Re-use has the potential to be the most impactful sustainability trend in the data centre industry,” states Lucas Beran, principal analysis at Dell’Oro Group.

So you're running an ethical and sustainable business but how do you ensure that any partners you work with or companies you purchase from etc are following the same principles as you?

The first rule is to ask lots of questions and do as much investigation into their business as you can, for instance, spend time going through their website.

Here are some more tips that may help you -

How to choose an ethical supplier, your checklist:
✨ Do they have any audits available?
✨ How many staff do they employ?
✨ Is a living wage paid?
✨ Is overtime paid?
✨ What facilities do they have & do they outsource any processes?
✨ Do they have any social & ethical business practises they can share? For example, union groups, lunchtime exercises, social canteen, maternity pay?

How to choose a sustainable supplier, your checklist:
Do they have any internal sustainable practices in place such as:
✨ Energy Efficiency
✨ Water Efficiency
✨ Chemical Management
✨ Pollution Reduction
✨ Recycling & Waste
✨ Organic & Environmentally Friendly Materials
✨ Sustainable Business Model
✨ Fair Trade
✨ Decent Working Conditions
✨ Ethical Sourcing & Supply Chain Management
✨ Supporting Traditional Skills

I can think of a million and one things I could do with that extra time but the first thing is to know how to achieve it!

What's the solution?

Automation.

With over 26 years of experience implementing technology for large and small businesses, I am on a mission to help small business owners to learn the skills they need to make smart choices in an ever-moving software market, and to implement the tools they buy effectively in a manner that actually reduces the burden of work in their business, rather than increases it

Implemented correctly, automation can eliminate many of the manual tasks in your business which can make you feel busy, but not productive.

Imagine how your week would feel if you could eliminate a day and a half of burdensome tasks, and use that time to productively grow your business, get back to what you went into business to do, or just take time off.

What is green hosting then?

It's an eco-friendly way of internet hosting that involves green technologies to help reduce your environmental impact.

It usually involves carbon offsetting, powering a data centre directly with renewable energy, planting trees, plants and grass around and over the data centre and day to day things like energy conservation and energy-saving appliances.

It has become much cheaper now to use a green hosting company and there is a big pool to choose from.

Some things to look for in a green hosting company are -

-Using low-voltage computer equipment
-Augmenting active cooling with outside air during mild weather
-Improving airflow through servers which would allow operators to use higher cooling temperatures
-Upgrading Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRACs) and other HVAC components with more efficient units
-Isolating cold air from hot air produced by the servers to improve loading of the HVAC equipment (which improves efficiency)
-The use of energy-efficient lighting and occupancy sensors in the building
-Purchasing Renewable Energy Credits or producing renewable energy directly
-Contributing to other Green organisations that promote energy efficiency and conservation, renewable energy, or sustainable practices.

Businesses rely on IT to improve productivity, share information and reduce the time it takes to communicate. Despite all this, many small businesses tend to manage it quite poorly.

Here are a few tips that might help you improve your IT experience -

- Maintain your software
- Update your software regularly
- Don't click on that internet ad
- Avoid fake programs
- Back up your data
- Don't share unnecessarily
- Invest in your web presence
- Upgrade or replace your system
- Consider a back up computer

There are a multitude of ways you can save energy and help shrink your carbon footprint.

In the office these could include things like only turning on lights you're using and turning off all unnecessary ones.

Putting the heating on a timer so you don't heat an empty office.

Ask your employer if they use renewable energy and if not have a conversation around the benefits of changing this situation.

Try not to print a document if you can make do with a saved copy on your computer. If you really do need a hard copy make sure you use double sided printing to save paper.

Do you really need to fly to that meeting? Are there other transport options you can look at or could you even conduct the meeting on one of the many on-line options available now? If being there in person is the best option alway try to fly direct rather than stopping over as the taking off and landing use more fuel than cruising at altitude.

Any electrical items left on standby can use up to 85% of the energy they would use if turned on so switch it off!

You can also use your IT equipment for longer instead of replacing it unnecessarily and when the time comes to change go for a remanufactured laptop from Circular Computing.

You wouldn't think it but you could be inadvertently contributing to climate change just by sending an email.

Based on numbers crunched by Mike Berners-Lee 10 years ago we could be generating 1.6kg of CO2 in a single day just with our emails! That figure could in fact be higher now.

By simply stopping unnecessary niceties such as “thank you” emails we could collectively save a lot of carbon emissions. If every adult in the UK sent one less “thank you” email, it could save 16,433 tonnes of carbon a year – the equivalent to taking 3,334 diesel cars off the road, according to energy company, OVO

Watching Netflix and online videos over terrestrial tv, investing in cryptocurrency, and even listening to music online all produce carbon emissions too.

The numbers are pretty small around all of this but with such a large number of people globally engaging in these activities it soon adds up.

Changes in our personal behaviour will help but the real change needs to be made within the industry to ensure that all carbon emissions are reduced at source.

Every year an estimated 2 million tonnes of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) items are discarded by householders and companies in the UK. (source: HSE)

Whilst this sounds like a lot it's less than a third of the 170 million new electrical items that are purchased in the UK.

Did you know that almost all electrical items with a plug or battery can be recycled and there's actually enough steel in an old iron to produce 13 steel cans.

So what can you recycle and how do you go about it?
