Automatically assign meaningful colours to layers and objects in Autodesk 3ds Max with SiNi Layer Colour Coding.
In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to classify scene content using layer and object names, identify possible organisation errors and apply a consistent colour-coding standard across complex architectural visualisation scenes.
Layer Colour Coding is particularly useful for:
• Organising complex 3ds Max scenes
• Colour-coding architectural layers automatically
• Identifying incorrectly organised objects
• Auditing layer and object naming
• Finding unrecognised scene content
• Creating consistent studio standards
• Reviewing imported architectural models
• Sharing classification presets across a team
Built-in architectural visualisation classifications include Glass, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Furniture, Accessories, Lighting, Vegetation, People, Animals, Vehicles, Fixtures and Fittings, Structure, Architecture, Terrain, Cameras, XRefs and Working content.
Each classification contains configurable name keywords and a representative parent colour. You can edit the built-in classifications or create your own to match the naming conventions used by your studio.
Layer Analysis reports:
• Matched layers
• Layers requiring colour updates
• Matched objects
• Objects requiring colour updates
• Possible layer mismatches
• Unrecognised layers
• Unrecognised objects
Selecting an analysis result populates the Layer Content Review, allowing the corresponding layers or objects to be identified directly in 3ds Max.
Keep Object Classification is the recommended colour-assignment mode. Objects retain the colour associated with their own classification, making an incorrectly placed object visually distinct from its parent layer.
Alternatively, Adopt Parent Layer Colour applies the classification colour of the parent layer to its recognised objects.
Unrecognised content remains unchanged, and Layer Analysis does not modify the scene until Apply to Scene is selected.
Classification names, keywords, colours and object-assignment settings can be saved as editable presets and shared across a studio to maintain a consistent colour-coding standard.
