October is Black History month in the UK. And this year we're focusing on highlighting 31 Black British women that have contributed to our society both historical and current day.⠀

Today, we're highlighting Gugu Mbatha-Raw.⠀

Gugulethu "Gugu" Mbatha-Raw MBE is an English actress. After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she began acting in British television and stage productions, appearing in the science-fiction series Doctor Who (2007), and went on to appear in American productions such as the comedy film Larry Crowne (2011), and the short-lived television series Undercovers (2010) and Touch (2012).⠀

Mbatha-Raw's breakthrough came with the British period drama Belle (2013), for which she won the BIFA Award for Best Actress, and the romantic drama Beyond the Lights (2014). Her leading performance as the titular character in Jessica Swale's 2015 play Nell Gwynn earned her a nomination for the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actress.⠀

Her starring role in "San Junipero", an episode in sea*on three of the anthology series Black Mirror, was praised. Her career progressed with roles in the films Miss Sloane (2016), Beauty and the Beast (2017), Misbehaviour (2020), and The Morning Show (2019).⠀

October is Black History month in the UK. And this year we're focusing on highlighting 31 Black British women that have contributed to our society both historical and current day.⠀

Today, we're highlighting Diane Abbott.⠀

Diane Abbott is a British politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. A member of the Labour Party and Labour Party Black Sections, the same as fellow MPs Paul Boateng, Bernie Grant and Keith Vaz, who entered Parliament on the same historic occasion, she served as the party's Shadow Home Secretary from 2016 to 2020. The first black woman elected to Parliament, she is the longest-serving black MP in the House of Commons.⠀

Born in Paddington to a British Jamaican family, Abbott studied History at Newnham College, Cambridge. She worked in the civil service and as a reporter for Thames Television and TV-am before becoming a press officer for the Greater London Council. Joining Labour, she was elected to Westminster City Council in 1982 and then as an MP in 1987, being re-elected in every general election since.⠀

October is Black History month in the UK. And this year we're focusing on highlighting 31 Black British women that have contributed to our society both historical and current day.⠀

Today, we're highlighting Margaret Busby.⠀

Margaret Busby OBE, Hon. FRSL is a Ghanaian-born publisher, editor, writer and broadcaster. She currently resides in the UK. She was Britain's youngest and first black female book publisher. In the 1960s she co-founded with Clive Allison (1944–2011) the London-based publishing house Allison and Busby (A & B). She edited the anthology Daughters of Africa (1992), and its 2019 follow-up New Daughters of Africa. ⠀

Busby has regularly worked for radio and television since the late 1960s. ⠀

In 2014, following the death of Maya Angelou, Busby scripted a major tribute entitled Maya Angelou: A Celebration, which took place on 5 October at the Royal Festival Hall during the Southbank Centre's London Literature Festival; directed by Paulette Randall, and chaired by Jon Snow and Moira Stuart, the celebration featured contributions from artists including Adjoa Andoh, Angel Coulby, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicola Hughes, Ella Odedina, NITROvox, Roderick Williams and Ayanna Witter-Johnson.⠀

She is a recipient of the Benson Medal from the Royal Society of Literature.⠀

Over the last 50 years, she has been recognised and won numerous awards and including becoming an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to Literature and to Publishing in 2006. Most recently, she has been voted one of the "100 Great Black Britons".⠀

October is Black History month in the UK. And this year we're focusing on highlighting 31 Black British women that have contributed to our society both historical and current day.⠀

Today, we're highlighting Lashana Lynch.⠀

Lashana Lynch is a British actress. She is of Jamaican heritage and was born on Hammersmith, London.⠀

She is best known for playing the role of Rosaline Capulet in the ABC period drama series Still Star-Crossed. Lynch was cast as the lead character in the American period drama series produced by Shonda Rhimes.⠀

In 2019, she played fighter pilot Maria Rambeau in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain Marvel.⠀

She has been cast as Nomi in the James Bond film No Time to Die due to be released in 2021.⠀

Today, we're highlighting Naomi Campbell.⠀

Naomi Campbell is mostly known for her modeling, but she's also an actress, and businesswoman.⠀

Campbell is of Jamaican descent and grew up in Streatham, South London. ⠀

She was scouted at the age 15 while window shopping in Covent Garden and had great success from that time.⠀

She has walked the catwalk for a number of high-end designers and has been on the cover of British, French, and American Vogue magazines.⠀

Campbell has appeared in music videos like Michael Jackson's "In The Closet" and had a recurring character in the Fox drama Empire.⠀

Campbell is also involved with several charitable causes and throughout her career, has been outspoken against the racial bias that exists in the fashion industry.⠀

Since being discovered at 15, she's established herself amongst the most recognisable and in-demand models of the late 1980s and the 1990s and was one of six models of her generation declared supermodels by the fashion industry and the international press.⠀
