Two UK headlines, one workshop lesson.

SMMT’s August figures show the new-car market up 13.7% to 94,236 units, with battery-electric cars at 29.8% share (still below the 33% ZEV mandate target year-to-date). In the same news cycle, Jaguar Land Rover opened orders for the first fully electric Range Rover, built at Solihull after major electrification investment.

That does not mean Jaguar and Land Rover ICE/hybrid cars stop needing careful diagnosis. Turbo-actuator limp mode, boost control faults and EML issues remain common on applications such as Evoque/Freelander 2.2 and Jaguar Hella/Garrett actuators.

Plain-English check list before condemning the actuator:
1. Confirm the stored boost/turbo codes and match them to the live symptoms (limp, lag, EML).
2. Check vacuum pipes, electrical connector and supply where the system uses them — don’t skip the supporting circuit.
3. Read the part number from the fitted actuator; families vary by engine and turbo.
4. Avoid fitting an arbitrary used unit without proving the fault path.
5. Prefer repair of the original actuator where viable so fitment stays correct.

UK drivers are seeing a sharp rise in car-computer breakdowns.

The AA reports body control module (BCM) related callouts have more than doubled since 2020 and now sit in the top five reasons for AA attendances — around 36,000 a year. A faulty BCM can hit lights, windows, wipers, central locking and alarms in one go, often after a reverse jump-start, water ingress or botched electrical work.

Plain-English check list before you condemn the module:
1. Confirm the stored body/network codes and match them to the symptoms
2. Load-test the 12V battery and check recent jump-start history
3. Inspect for water around the module, connectors and drains
4. Read the part number from the fitted unit — do not fit a random used BCM
5. Choose repair of the original unit where possible so coding stays with the vehicle

We remanufacture Jaguar XF BCMs (2008–2015 common families including DX23-14B476-*) with a minimum 24-month warranty and no coding required on return.

Most people still buy used — and that keeps body-module work on the bench.

SMMT (11 Aug 2026): the UK used car market returned to growth in Q2, up 0.7% to 2,009,318 transactions — the first Q2 above two million since 2021. Battery-electric used sales rose 67.0% to a record 5.5% share, but petrol and diesel still accounted for almost nine in ten used cars. Separately, on 14 Aug government opened a ZEV Mandate consultation (responses by 23 Oct) while SMMT welcomed a review of new-car sales targets — the used parc does not flip overnight.

So workshop reality still includes ageing premium electronics. On Jaguar XF (roughly 2008–2015), BCM faults commonly show as:
1) “Key not found” / no-start immobiliser behaviour
2) Lost or invalid VIN recognition
3) Water ingress and corrosion on the module
4) Broader body/security electrical gremlins after moisture damage

Before swapping an unknown used BCM: confirm the symptom and codes on a competent scan tool, check battery/voltage and related wiring, identify the fitted unit from the label, and do not assume every no-start is “just keys” — wrong-used-unit coding and latent water damage create comebacks.

BMW FRM/FRM3 problems often follow a low-voltage event: exterior lights, windows, indicators or other body functions may stop working.

Do not assume the module is the only cause. Check battery health, charging voltage, fuses, feeds and earths, then read the vehicle properly before deciding on repair. Original-unit repair can be a sensible route where the module is confirmed faulty.

Mercedes CPC3 faults can present as warning lights, starting issues or communication errors. Before condemning the module, prove the vehicle’s power supply, earths and CAN network first. Where assessment supports it, original-unit repair can preserve vehicle-specific data and reduce unnecessary coding.

July’s new-car story is electric growth — and a mandate gap that will not clear the existing VAG parc.

SMMT (5 Aug 2026): UK new car registrations rose 11.7% in July to 156,571 (best July since 2019). Battery-electric cars were up 44.5% to a 27.5% share. Year to date the market is up 9.5% to 1.294m, with BEVs at about 25.3%. SMMT’s latest outlook still puts full-year BEV share around 27.4% of a 2.18m market — well short of the 33% ZEV mandate path.

Petrol still took about 40% of July. Volkswagen Golf remains a top-ten model. That matters in the workshop: dry-clutch DQ200 / 0AM 7-speed DSG mechatronics on Golf, Polo, A1, A3 and related VAG cars keep failing with everyday symptoms:
1) Loss of drive or gear selection failure
2) Jerky/delayed shifts, EPC or flashing PRNDS
3) Repeated 30A fuse blows
4) Codes such as P17BF, P189C, P0841

Before condemning the box: confirm codes and symptoms on a competent scan tool, check battery/voltage and related wiring, identify the fitted mechatronic from the label (0AM families), and do not jump straight to an unknown used unit — pressure, coding and latent hydraulic faults create comebacks.

New-car headlines are electric. The cars already on UK roads are getting older.

SMMT figures show June 2026 new registrations up 11.4%, with battery-electric vehicles taking 30% of the month. Year-to-date the market is up 9.2%. At the same time, DfT/RAC figures put the average licensed UK car at around 10 years — the oldest on record, with about two in five cars over a decade old.

In the same SMMT tables, Jaguar new registrations have collapsed (single figures YTD). That does not retire the large Jaguar XF parc still in workshops.

If an XF (typically 2008–2015) shows:
1) Key not found / key not recognised
2) Missing or corrupted VIN in the BCM
3) Water damage / intermittent body electrics after ingress

…confirm the code and symptoms, check battery/power and related networks, identify the fitted BCM from the label (common DX23-14B476-xx families), then choose a repair path. Do not jump straight to an unknown used module — coding, fitment and latent water damage risks create comebacks.

BMW FRM/FRM3 faults can show up as lighting, window or mirror problems, often after a low-voltage event such as a flat battery or jump start.

Before replacing the module, confirm battery condition and charging voltage, check fuses and supplies, and read the complete fault memory. Low voltage can create several misleading symptoms.

When the FRM is confirmed faulty, repairing the original unit may avoid the uncertainty of a used replacement and its coding history. Essex Recons can assess suitable modules: https://essexrecons.com
