The Security Event - NEC Birmingham.

The 3 of us escaped to the NEC in Birmingham this week for the annual security event show.

It was our first time attending and now that security is a bigger part of the work we’re doing, it felt like the right time to go to see what’s happening across the industry.

The show gave us a good chance to spend some time looking at new security systems, access control, CCTV and the network infrastructure that supports it all. Getting a practical demonstration and seeing equipment first hand is far more useful than reading tech specs or brochures.

It was also a great opportunity to meet with suppliers and manufacturers, have a few honest conversations, and spend some time trying out new kit. This face‑to‑face time is hard to come by once we’re back into the usual routine of projects and installations. We got to put faces to names and also bumped into several collegues that we hadn’t seen in years, plus we also finally got to meet Rob from KHG for the first time, who we have been back and forth with for years but never actually met in person!!

The world of security is evolving and the range, quality, reliability and ease of operation for end users of products is increasing at speed, so as we continue to take on more security installations, keeping up to date is very important. Things move quickly, and we want to make sure that what we are installing is reliable, suitable and right for long term reliability.

A worthwhile day out, with plenty to take back for our current and future projects and despite the M1 living up to expectations it was definately worth attending. We will be putting the event into our diary again for next year.

CEDIA Awards 2025

This month we had the pleasure of attending the 2025 CEDIA Smart Home Awards in Central London — our annual industry event celebrating the very best in home technology and smart home design. From high-end home cinemas and immersive audio systems to full smart home integration, the awards recognise the innovation, craftsmanship, and expertise of the people and teams who bring these projects to life. It’s the one evening each year when the industry comes together to share ideas, showcase excellence, and acknowledge the standards that continue to push the trade forward.

For us, it’s also the rare opportunity to swap our usual work gear for something a bit smarter. Seeing everyone out of their natural habitat of dust sheets, cable reels and half-finished cinemas is a refreshing change — and a reminder that even in such a hands-on industry, presentation and detail matter.

A big thank-you to Alister and the team at PMC for inviting us to the event and for their excellent hospitality throughout the evening - and to our table guests for making the evening so enjoyable. It was a pleasure to spend the night in such good company, surrounded by fellow professionals who share the same passion for high-quality home technology.

Congratulations to Owen at Cinemaworks, who won the Level One Cinema Award for his project — a thoroughly well-deserved result that reflects the care and attention to detail he brings to every build. Owen is also the brains behind the current cinema project we’re building for him, and it’s fantastic to see his work recognised at this level.

We’d also like to congratulate Nicky Moss, who won the Special Recognition Award for her work with the charity Cost of Cancer, which she set up to support cancer patients with the financial costs of treatment. A well-deserved recognition of her hard work and commitment.

If you’re considering a high-end home cinema, immersive audio system, or smart home setup, get in touch. We’d be delighted to talk through your ideas and help bring your vision to life.

A Day at PMC’s “The Ivories” Studio, Islington

We recently spent the day at PMC’s London studio, The Ivories, in Islington. This is a space dedicated to demonstrating what the range of PMC high-performance audio can achieve.

The studio gives visitors the chance to experience PMC loudspeakers exactly as they’re intended to be heard in a controlled environment that prioritises accuracy, detail and balance. It’s also where PMC showcase the technologies behind both their professional and residential loudspeaker ranges, from monitors used in leading recording studios around the world to the systems found in high-end home cinemas.

One of the highlights of our day is the studio’s Dolby Atmos mixing capability. This allows producers and engineers to create immersive, three-dimensional audio mixes with precise spatial placement (the perception of 360-degree sphere of sound around the listener, including height and depth - this means hearing the helicopter flying over your head or the symbol crashing at 7 o’clock to your left ear). Listening to Atmos content in a room designed and calibrated to this level gives a real sense of what’s possible when the technology is used to its full potential, it also shows how these setups can translate into the home environments that we design and install.

Our visit gave us the opportunity to explore different audio configurations, understand the engineering behind them, and appreciate the performance these systems deliver when everything is set up correctly. It’s always worthwhile to step away from the tools and spend time with the people moving audio design forward.

A big thank-you to Alister and the team at PMC for their time, knowledge and hospitality throughout the day. It was a thoroughly enjoyable visit and a reminder of the standards we aim to deliver in every project.

If you’re considering a high-quality audio system or a dedicated cinema room, feel free to get in touch — we’re always happy to advise and help shape the right solution for your home.

⚡️Zappi EV Charger Installation

We’ve completed this installation of a Zappi EV charger from for a client. With a home finished to such a high standard, our approach had to be meticulous — ensuring the installation was not only functional and safe, but also discreet and sympathetic to the aesthetics of our clients home.

A home EV charger offers a number of practical benefits:

* Convenience – charge when it suits you, without relying on public chargers.
* Cost savings – make use of off-peak tariffs for cheaper running costs.
* Sustainability – Zappi can use energy from solar or wind generation to reduce your carbon footprint.
*
We specify Zappi because of its build quality, reliability, ease of use, technical support and smart features such as load balancing, programmable schedules, and renewable energy integration.

For this project, as with all of our installations, attention to detail was the key:

🚘 We utilised the property’s existing network infrastructure and added in a network switch to be able to provide a hardwired network connection to the EV charger. Wherever possible we install a hardwired connection which helps to avoid any potential unreliability of the Wi-Fi signal and ensuring stable communications with the app and monitoring systems.

🚘 Cabling was routed with precision taking care to preserve the finished décor and avoid surface cable runs whilst ensuring long term reliability.

🚘 We carry out comprehensive testing and commissioning of our installation before handover and walk the client through the operating procedure for their new charger.

🚘The result is a charging point that is unobtrusive and blends with the property, offers the client total convenience, and is built to perform reliably for many years.

If you’re considering an EV charger — especially in a high-specification home — we’re always happy to advise on the right equipment and the best way to integrate it with your existing infrastructure.

🪴Garden Kitchen Electrical & Lighting Installation Project

We have recently completed the electrical and lighting work for our client’s newly installed garden kitchen, a smart and practical addition to their outdoor space.

Our client designed the new kitchen to compliment the garden layout and asked for a neat and reliable lighting installation that would integrate with the existing exterior lighting. We focused on achieving a practical and durable result, using high-quality components and a first class installation while working with the timescale of the client and installer

⚡️Weatherproof exterior sockets – providing safe and convenient access to power for kitchen appliances and outdoor use, with minimal visual impact due to the matt black finish.

🚰Instant hot water heater - using a compact, under sink mounted unit supplying hot water on demand, suitable for washing up and food prep without needing to run separate hot pipework back to the house.

💡Wall-mounted Collingwood downlights – we chose these for their quality construction and consistent, warm light output with a long 7 year manufacturer’s warranty. These have been positioned to give even coverage across the work area and adding a hint of atmosphere after dark.

🔆LED strip lighting installed under worktops – discreet, functional decorative lighting that also gives the kitchen a finished, contemporary feel in the evenings while complimenting the natural beechwood finish.

All of the cabling was carefully installed and terminated with protection against the elements and allowing for any future amendments or modifications. As with all of our projects the outcome was a clean and reliable result that complements the rest of the installation.

💻 Two Days of RTI Smart Home System Training at Habitech

We’ve just completed an intensive two-day training course with Habitech on the RTI smart home control system – a powerful and flexible solution for managing audio, video, lighting, heating and more all from a single interface.

Control systems like RTI bring together the many moving parts of a modern home and make them simple to operate. Whether it’s setting the mood with lighting, distributing music throughout the house, or managing heating schedules efficiently, a well-programmed control system turns complexity into convenience.

Just as importantly, this kind of technology needs to be properly understood and professionally installed. That’s why we continue to invest time in keeping our knowledge up to date. Systems evolve, standards change, and we want to ensure that every installation we deliver is built on a solid foundation of training and best practice.

A big thank you to the team at Habitech for their excellent hospitality and expert guidance. It’s always a pleasure to work alongside people who are as committed to quality and detail as we are.

If you’re considering a smart home system - whether for a new build, renovation or to simplify what’s already in place — we’re always happy to advise.

The Benefits of Full-Spectrum, Flicker-Free Lighting.

We recently installed several new John Lewis light fittings and at the same time upgraded the bulbs (lamps) to Ray full-spectrum, flicker-free lighting. This is a small change that makes a huge difference. Lighting isn’t just about brightness, it affects everything from visual comfort and colour accuracy to wellbeing and productivity.

Many standard LED bulbs flicker imperceptibly, which can contribute to eye strain, fatigue, and headaches - in this case these were the exact symptoms that our client was experiencing. This can be particularly noticeable especially in spaces where you may spend long periods reading, working, or relaxing. Full-spectrum flicker-free lighting provides a more stable, natural light that is much easier on the eyes and enhances the overall feel of a space.

Why should you upgrade to full-spectrum, flicker-free lighting?

💡Better Visual Comfort – No flicker means reduced eye strain and fatigue, making it ideal for home offices and living spaces.💡Natural Colour Accuracy – Full-spectrum lighting closely mimics natural daylight, ensuring interiors look their best and colours appear true to life.💡Enhanced Wellbeing – High-quality lighting can support better focus, mood, and even sleep by reducing exposure to artificial flicker.💡Energy Efficient & Long Lasting – These bulbs provide high-quality, consistent light with lower energy use and a longer lifespan.
💡Proven increases in productivity and performance.

And the one final benefit of all this healthy goodness is that the bulbs (lamps) look exactly the same as your normal ones.

Good lighting is one of the simplest and most effective upgrades you can make to your home or workspace. If you’re considering improving your lighting setup please get in touch - we’d be happy to help you find the best solution for your space.

Audio calibration training with Tom and Owen from the Home Cinema Podcast

This week we spent a day with Tom and Owen from the Home Cinema Podcast on a deep dive into audio calibration at CEDIA in Cambridgeshire. This was a hands-on session which reinforced a key principle: a superior home cinema isn’t simply achieved by randomly installing hardware and relying on automatic calibration settings from an AVR - it demands a carefully executed manual calibration.

While auto-calibration systems found in many AVRs can provide a decent starting point, our experience from the day confirmed that manual calibration offers a far greater level of precision. By fine-tuning each channel by hand we can tailor the sound to the unique acoustics of the room, ensuring that dialogue is crystal clear, surround effects are accurately placed and the overall soundstage is perfectly balanced.

This meticulous process allows us to adjust for variables such as room shape, construction materials, speaker and seating positioning - all factors that automated systems and interior designers can sometimes overlook.

For our clients, the benefits are clear. A manually calibrated system delivers an immersive, cinema-grade experience that truly enhances every viewing session. The extra attention to detail not only ensures that every element of an audio system performs at its optimum level, but it also translates into a more consistent and reliable performance over time. This precision means that our clients enjoy exceptional sound quality, tailored specifically to their cinema, resulting in an environment that’s both engaging and comfortable.

We owe a big thank you to Tom and Owen for sharing their expertise - it’s insights like these that underscore the importance of precision and attention to detail in home cinema design.

A simple upgrade, a huge improvement!

We’ve just upgraded a client’s existing in-ceiling speakers to the 6 and 8 inch Sonos by Sonance Architectural Series and the difference is incredible. These speakers deliver crisper highs, deeper bass, and a more balanced sound, filling the space with clear, room-filling audio whether for background music or a full-room experience in party mode.

To ensure the best possible performance, we have also run Sonos Trueplay which analyses the room’s acoustics and automatically adjusts the speaker output. This means the sound is precisely tuned to the space, accounting for surfaces like walls, ceilings, and furniture that can affect the way audio travels.

The result? Consistently well-balanced, natural sound, no matter the room layout.
A truly worthwhile upgrade – The improvement in clarity and depth is night and day.
Cost-effective – A high-performance audio upgrade without major changes.
🔈 Designed to blend in – Sleek, trimless design that sits discreetly in the ceiling.
🔈 Optimised for the space – Sonos Trueplay ensures perfectly balanced sound in any room.
🔈 Great for any occasion – Ideal for everything from casual listening to entertaining.

A fantastic option for anyone looking to enhance their home audio with minimal disruption. If you’re considering an upgrade, we’d be happy to help!
