Moving house? Sort broadband before the boxes.

It's the job that gets left until moving week, and then you're living off your phone's data while you wait for an engineer.

Three things, in this order:

1) When: order 2 to 4 weeks before you move. Set-up can take up to two weeks.

2) Where: check the full address, not just the postcode. Two homes on the same street can get very different broadband.

3) Still in contract? Ask your provider two things. Can you reach my new address? Does moving restart my contract? If they can't reach you, some providers let you leave without an exit fee.

And if you're out of contract, moving is the best time to switch. You're setting it all up anyway, and Ofcom found in-contract customers pay £7 to £9 a month less than those out of contract.

When's your move?

Which Ethernet cable should you buy?

Short answer: Cat6. Fast today, ready for faster (tmr).

Here's why:

- Cat5: built for 100 Mbps. Swap it. Cat5e: 1 Gbps. Fine for most homes, so keep it.
- Cat6a: for long runs and wiring the house.
- Cat7 and Cat8: extra cost, no real difference at home.

Console, TV, PC? Cat6 does the lot!

And a handy test: plug in and run a speed test. If it's still slow on a cable, it's likely your line rather than your Wi-Fi, and that's worth sorting.

Wi-Fi 5, 6 or 7: which one have you got? 📶

Check the sticker on your router: ac is 5, ax is 6, be is 7. Then two free fixes that make a real difference, and how to tell if it's time for a new router.

Leaving your broadband early? Check three dates before you pay an exit fee.

14 days: signed up online, by phone or at the door? You can cancel within 14 days, for any reason.

30 days: a price rise that wasn't in your contract? You get 30 days to leave with no exit fee, from the day you're told.

30 days: speed below the minimum you were guaranteed? Your provider gets 30 days to fix it. If it can't, you can leave (at providers signed up to Ofcom's speeds code).

None of those fit? The fee usually falls every month. And some new providers pay towards it. That's called switching credit, and some of the deals on our site include it.

All eight ways out are in our free guide. Link in the comments.

How fast does your broadband really need to be?

We put some example homes through RightSpeed.co.uk, our free calculator.

A busy family of four with everything on at once (a 4K film, two more screens streaming, a video call and a game) needs about 70 Mbps.

One person watching one HD stream: 11. A full house of five or more: 144. It depends what's on.

Working from home? Check your upload too. That's what you send out. Two video calls needed 13 Mbps. Add a cloud backup and security cameras and it was 31.

It's free, eight questions, about 45 seconds. Link in the comments.

What did yours come out at?
