According to security researchers in the year 2022, hackers are going to shift their focus from directly targeting corporate critical infrastructure to corporate users-based attacks to break into the corporate networks.

The shift of target is based on the fact that corporate users are least resistant when handling . Adding to this adversary when most of the corporate users are working remotely highly increases the chance of a successful cyber attack.

Protection Mantra:

Corporate users must start practicing strong security habits, which include:

1) Must use strong and unique passwords at every sites and user multi-factor authentication

2) Install security software or use , which is built into .

3) Do not open email attachments from unknown users.

4) Do not expose internal services to the Internet, such as Remote Desktop and NAS devices.

5) Install software and operating system updates as they become available.

6) Do not download pirated software cracks or key generators, as they commonly lead to ransomware and information-stealing trojans.

Following these simple security habits will significantly reduce the risk of malware infections to consumers and should be practiced by everyone on all of their devices.

researchers have discovered that a threat actor can insert an executable file called “User-Centric” in chat to trick the user into running it.

Once executed, the malware writes data into the system registry installs DLLs and establishes persistence on the machine.

“In this Teams attack, can attach a malicious document to a chat thread. When clicked on, the file will eventually take over the user’s computer”.

The method used to gain access to Teams accounts remains unclear but some possibilities include stealing credentials for email or Microsoft 365 via phishing or compromising a partner or third party organization.

To defend against such attacks, The recommendations are following:

• Implement protection that downloads all files in a sandbox and inspects them for malicious content

• Deploy robust, full-suite security that secures all lines of business communication, including Teams

• Encourage end-users to reach out to IT when seeing an unfamiliar file

• Most importantly organization should keep conducting regular cyber security awareness training for every employee
