Are your emails actually reaching people’s inboxes?

It’s easy to assume that when you hit send, your email lands safely in someone’s inbox. But sometimes they can end up in spam without you even realising it.

There are some simple things you can do to improve your email deliverability, and one of my favourite quick checks is Mail Tester.

You send a test email to the address it gives you, and within a few seconds it analyses your email and gives you a score out of 10, along with information about anything that could be affecting your deliverability.

It takes a couple of minutes and can be a really useful check if you're sending newsletters, marketing emails or regular updates to clients.

A small thing that could make a big difference to whether your emails actually get read.

Are the right clients finding your website - and when they do, are they choosing you?

I’m hosting another free online workshop with Jane Travis on Thursday 17th September, specifically for therapists and counsellors who want their website to work harder for their practice.

We’ll be looking at both sides of the equation:

Getting found - how to improve your visibility on Google, what actually matters for SEO, how AI search is changing things, and the common website issues that could be holding you back.

Getting chosen - how to make sure your website speaks to the right clients, clearly explains what you help with, and gives people a reason to get in touch.

The aim isn't to give you a list of 40 things you need to change. We'll focus on the two or three things that are likely to make the biggest difference to your own website.

It's free, online, relaxed and practical, with plenty of opportunity to bring your own questions.

Thursday 17th September
11am–12pm

You can reserve your free place via the link in the bio.

Therapists: have you updated your privacy notice yet?

With the new BACP Ethical Framework coming into effect on 3 November, your privacy notice needs to clearly explain how you collect, store and use client information - including the digital and AI tools your practice uses.

I’ve created a free, plain-English privacy notice template specifically for therapists, so you don’t have to start from a blank page.

It includes the key sections you’ll need, with guidance on how to customise it for your own practice, including:

What information you collect
Why you collect it and the relevant legal basis
The digital and AI tools you use
Who you share information with
How long you keep records
Your clients’ rights
How to keep the notice accessible and up to date

It also includes a step-by-step guide to help you work through the template and make sure it actually reflects your practice.

One important disclaimer: this isn't legal advice, and the template is a starting point rather than something to copy and publish without checking. If you're unsure about your obligations, speak to a data protection specialist, your professional body or your insurer.

But if you've been putting off your privacy notice because you don't know where to start, this should make the job considerably easier.

The free template and full guide are available on my website.

Most AI-written copy reads like a brochure that won an award. Long words, no warmth, phrases no human says out loud.

The fix is one instruction. Before you ask for anything, tell it:

“Write the way I would explain this to a smart friend who is not in my industry. Short sentences, plain English, no marketing language, no buzzwords.”

Then paste in an example of your own writing so it copies your rhythm.

You will still need to edit. AI is a fast first draft, not a replacement for your voice. But this one line saves you from sounding like everyone else.

Spent a lovely day at Wild Magic back in July, supporting a brilliant charity and getting out into the countryside.

They have an incredible 80 acres of land with some really exciting plans for the future, including rewilding, education, camping and even festivals.

It was great to get a glimpse of what's being created there, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the project develops.

Sometimes it's good to step away from the laptop and spend a day somewhere completely different.

If you're BACP registered, there's a date worth pencilling in: midday on 3 November 2026.

That's when the new Ethical Framework becomes mandatory, and it covers AI for the first time. Whether you use AI for session notes, admin, marketing, or not at all, there's a small amount of prep worth doing.

I've written a plain-English guide to what it actually says: whether you can put client information into ChatGPT, what to tell clients, and a six-step sequence to work through before the deadline.

I'm a marketing consultant rather than the BACP, so it's a practical starting point rather than official guidance, and it links to the full framework throughout.

Hope it's useful.

Not everyone loves writing blogs. But if you want to grow your business, they can make a big difference to your SEO.

Once your practice is established, creating useful content around the questions your clients are actually asking can help you get found by more of the right people.

I learnt this myself during COVID, when I wrote around 60 guides covering everything from web design and marketing to SEO and blogging.

It completely changed how visible my business was online, and helped turn a small home business into something that attracted new clients, speaking opportunities and events.

But you don't need to write 60 blogs overnight. Start small. Even one useful, well-written article every few months can help demonstrate your expertise and give Google more useful content to understand.

Then build from there. Consistency beats trying to do everything at once.

Can you guess where in London this is?

I came across this bombed-out church at the weekend and was reminded how much history is tucked away in the middle of the city.

With all the skyscrapers, towers and new developments, I love that London still manages to hold on to little pieces of its past right in the heart of the city.

Do you know where this is? Let me know in the comments.
