If you're one of the many millions of people who use Google Chrome as your internet browser, be on the lookout for a malware scam that could compromise your personal details and passwords. Security experts have revealed that users are being tricked with a pop-up window asking to perform an update. The prompt comes after a user goes to a website that has been compromised by a hacker, which renders the page unreadable. [ 176 more words ]

In the Creators Update, this spring's big Windows 10 release, Microsoft is adding some new k***s and levers for managing updates, including an option to delay feature updates by up to a year. The biggest change is a new option to schedule or snooze updates. Here's what you can expect. The single most common complaint I've heard about Windows 10 is its lack of control over update timing. A skills shortage and "chaotic" handling of personal data breaches are undermining confidence in the government's ability to protect the UK from cyber attacks, MPs have warned. The Commons Public Accounts Committee said ministers had taken too long to consolidate the "alphabet soup" of agencies tasked with stopping attacks. Cyber attacks are ranked among the top four risks to UK national security. [ 303 more words ]

Staff at social media company Twitter have donated more than $1m (£790,000) to the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU has pledged to fight President Donald Trump's temporary ban on refugees and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries. PINCH YOURSELF. A security company has found that the amount of malware that was scuttling around in 2016 was even higher than the amount that was pi***ng on your chips in 2015. We can't believe it, except we totally can. Of course malware is going up. People are still using the same god awful passwords that they were using in the 1990s, hackers haven't gone away, and we still have to pay a lot of attention when the stomach-droppingly dull Patch Tuesday notifications start to roll out. Spotlight, the name of Logitech's new presentation remote, looks a lot like the original Apple TV remote. Its metal housing with curved edges fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. Buttons are sparse, with Spotlight having just three. The bottom of the remote is removable, revealing a USB dongle that automatically connects Spotlight to your computer. Alternatively, you can link Spotlight directly to your computer's Bluetooth connection. [ 253 more words ]

Microsoft’s brief foray into ARM-based tablets running their own version of Windows debuted with the Surface RT and, after one attempt to refresh the product (Surface 2), faded from view thereafter. Microsoft’s mobile phones still run on ARM hardware, but the company dropped its attempts to build a crossover device that would leverage ARM hardware and the familiar operating environment of the traditionally x86-based Windows. While it seems “smart” everything is in full swing, the full realization of the Internet of Things is in essence still on standby mode. Homes are smarter than ever and virtual reality, augmented reality, personal drones and a dizzying array of wearables and medical devices flood the market, but there is still potential for more. The possibilities are endless, and much of the technology is already baked in, just waiting to be actualized. [ 846 more words ]

A new WhatsApp feature is on the way, but this might not be the sort of update you’d been hoping for. Instead of giving you the ability to send GIFs more easily or letting you avoid your friends knowing when you’ve read and ignored their messages, the new feature will track your every movement. Not only will it let WhatsApp know where you are at any given moment, it will allow your mates see your current location too, meaning those fake ‘can’t I’m still in the office’ excuses are no longer going cut it.
