Belonging is not a “nice to have” during transition.

When pupils feel known, supported and safe enough to learn, it can strengthen attendance, engagement, achievement and wellbeing.

And one factor can make a meaningful difference: friendship.

A transition study found that once friendships were established in secondary school, a sense of belonging followed.

As pupils prepare to move into Year 7, transition support needs to go beyond timetables, classrooms and routines. It should also create opportunities for connection, relationships and a real sense of place.

Sign up to receive the webinar recording, Bridging the Transition Gap: Belonging Doesn’t Just Happen, along with our Transition Guide and practical classroom resources to use on transition days and well into Year 7.

Some pupils will tell you when they are finding transition difficult.

Others may become quieter, withdraw from lessons or simply try to manage on their own.

For schools, the challenge is spotting those pupils before they begin to disengage.

Transition information should go beyond attendance, attainment and formal support plans.

Creating opportunities for pupils to share how they are feeling can help schools understand who may need additional support, build stronger relationships and strengthen belonging from the start.

Listen to Jon and Nicola talk about how belonging should be at the heart of all transition work to help your year 7s, seen, heard and valued from transition day onwards.

Sign up to receive the webinar recording: Bridging the Transition Gap: Belong doesn’t just happen; along with our transition guide and classroom resources, you can use on transition days and well into year 7.

The transition from primary to secondary school is about more than helping students find their way around a new building. It's about helping them find their place within a new community.

When students feel they belong, they're more likely to engage in learning, build confidence and develop positive attendance habits. Yet belonging doesn't happen by accident. It needs to be intentionally woven into the transition experience.

Join Jon Tiss and Nicola Jones-Ford as they explore practical ways schools can make belonging a central part of transition and support students from day one.

Schools invest significant time and energy into transition.

Open evenings, induction days, summer activities and welcome packs all play an important role in helping students prepare for secondary school.

But what happens after the first few weeks?

For many students, the real challenge isn't finding their way around a new building. It's finding their place within a new community.

Belonging is often the difference between students who simply arrive and students who truly settle, engage and thrive.

Join Jon Tiss and Nicola Jones-Ford for a live webinar exploring how schools can make belonging a central part of their transition strategy. Drawing on research, practical experience and real-world examples, they'll discuss how schools can support students beyond the first day and create stronger foundations for attendance, confidence and learning.

We'll also explore how Satchel Pulse helps schools gain meaningful insight into students' experiences, making it easier to identify where support is needed most.
