NATO on Thursday, July 1, marked the 60th anniversary of the Alliance's work to keep European skies and territories secure. Since July 1, 1961, Allies have been working together and integrating their Air Defence arrangements and assets to provide coordinated, interlinked and collective Air Defence. The concept of Space (SSA) is all about tracking what is happening in the Near Space environment, including threats and vulnerabilities that have the potential to affect the safety, security and interests of all parties. Only by greater awareness can the situation be controlled and, in future years, mitigated through Active Debris Removal and/or moving space assets to avoid predicted collisions.
Much can be learnt from SA - seeing the “big picture” whilst reliably identifying a “needle in a haystack” (such as an ) so that decisions can be made and play-booked actions can be executed.

Effective decision-making requires timely access to reliable data, collected and presented in intuitive ways. Data within the context of space situational awareness however may take many forms, coming from disparate sources, imperfect, fragmented and potentially contradictory.
