Someone on your team needs to download a program or log in to a supplier's site. They search for it and click the first result.

That first result is often a paid ad, attackers buy ads too.

They use the real company's name, the real logo, and a web address that's close enough to pass. The page then either takes the login you type in or hands you a download with malware inside.

That contract you emailed is sitting in someone else's inbox forever, and it can be forwarded to anyone. For anything sensitive, share a link from OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox that only the named person can open, set it to expire, and switch it off when they're done.

Malware still arrives as an email attachment someone opens without thinking. Be wary of .exe, .msi, .scr, scripts like .js or .bat, disk images like .iso, and any Office file asking you to enable macros. Unexpected attachment? Check with the sender another way before opening it.

If your website runs on WordPress, when did anyone last log into it?

For most small businesses the answer is not since it was built.

Meanwhile the plugins that run it keep needing updates, and some get abandoned by their developers, so no updates are coming at all.

Attackers scan for exactly that, automatically, and get in through the old plugin.

Once they're in, the site quietly hosts scam pages or sends your visitors somewhere else. Most owners find out when a customer tells them, or when Google flags the site.

Attackers take leaked passwords and try them everywhere automatically. A strong password doesn't help if you reused it. Use a password manager and turn on MFA.

If someone gets into your domain account at GoDaddy or Namecheap, they can point your website anywhere and take over your email. Put MFA on that account, turn on the domain transfer lock, and make sure it auto-renews. Businesses lose domains every year by forgetting to renew.
