A different kind of training day for the Subfrantic team.

We recently swapped the consoles and production kit for something equally important, first aid training.

It was great welcome back Andrew from Health Care Training Services, who put us through their paces. The team were given the opportunity to refresh their knowledge, learn some new skills and make sure they’re better prepared, should we ever need to put them into practice.

Before the festival crowds came the rehearsal room.

Ahead of Ren summer festival run, we welcomed the production to Subfrantic for part of the rehearsal and pre-production process.

Alongside the audio package, we supplied Chauvet ColorStrike M fixtures, an MA Lighting grandMA3 light, Samsung displays and a Unilumin LED wall, giving the team the tools to bring the different elements of the live show together before heading out.

That preparation then went into three huge summer appearances at All Points East, Boomtown Fair and Boardmasters Festivals.

It’s always satisfying to see a production go from rehearsals and prep to the finished show on stage.

Same engineer. Very different stages.

For the past 11 years, our Audio Specialist Dave Billings has been behind the FOH desk for Bury Tomorrow, taking their live sound to venues and festivals around the world.

This summer's European run was no different, taking Dave from huge festival crowds at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park to more intimate venues across the continent.

When he's not on the road with the band, Dave is an integral part of our in-house audio team, preparing and maintaining equipment, liaising with clients, and supporting productions and making sure everything that leaves Subfrantic is ready for show day.

That combination of touring experience and hands-on work behind the scenes is a huge part of the knowledge we have within our team.

Here's Dave at work across a few very different stops on Bury Tomorrow's summer tour.

What does it take to keep a festival show consistent across three very different stages?

For Ren summer appearances at All Points East, Boomtown Fair and Boardmasters, we supplied the audio and production package travelling with the show.

At the heart of the audio setup were Yamaha Music Global DM7s at both ends of the multicore, alongside Shure UK Axient wireless microphones and PSM1000 IEMs.

We also supplied the full mic, stand and signal package, comms and shout system, and added comfort monitors to the video rig.

A setup designed to give the team what they needed to take the same show from one festival stage to the next.

Great to see our kit out there doing what it does best.

60 years of music, culture and community.

This year marked a huge milestone for Notting Hill Carnival, celebrating six decades since the first outdoor procession took to the streets of west London in 1966.

Since then, Carnival has grown into one of the world’s biggest street festivals and an internationally recognised celebration of Caribbean culture, creativity and music.

For Subfrantic, having been involved with Carnival for over half of those 60 years, celebrating this landmark birthday is particularly special.

Take a look back at some of the moments and milestones that have shaped 60 years of Notting Hill Carnival, and keep an eye out for futures posts with more about our history with the event.

For the past 12 years, Yamaha digital mixing systems have played an important role in helping us deliver The Experience in Lagos, one of the world’s largest gospel concerts.

In 2018, Yamaha did a post on the role their audio mixing equipment played in the event, highlighting the introduction of PM10 into the project. Eight years after their original post our work at The Experience has again been featured by Yamaha, this time concentrating on how the brand's involvement in the event has developed and how we've continually integrated their new technologies into our workflow.

This latest case study takes a closer look behind the scenes at the 20th edition of the event, where more than 500,000 people attended across the 12-hour production where our team worked alongside the House On The Rock's technical crew to deliver another huge show.

Covering the evolution of the audio setup, this article talks about the RIVAGE PM10 and DM7 systems, the move to a fibre-based network and how the technology has developed alongside the event over the years.

There are also some great insights from our MD Steve Davies and House on the Rock's Head of Audio, Ebenezer Odunlami on the challenges of delivering a production of this scale and why reliability is so important.

A huge thank you to Yamaha for featuring the project and for their continued support both in the UK and Nigeria.

Our search for the next person to join the Subfrantic team continues.

We’ve had some great interest in our Junior Audio role so far, but there’s still time to apply.

The role will be split between working on site at gigs and events and spending time at our South London warehouse, prepping and de-prepping equipment and developing your knowledge of the kit we use.

Some industry experience is needed, but this is very much a role for someone who wants to learn, develop and build their career in live audio, with plenty of opportunities for hands-on and formal training along the way.

We’re looking to have someone join us in mid to late October, with applications closing on 30 September.

Interested? Email your CV and some information about yourself and your experience to [email protected] and we’ll send you the full job description.

That’s exactly what our upcoming Smaart Fundamentals Class is designed to help with.
