One of the biggest misconceptions about Cyber Essentials is that you're simply paying for a certificate.

In reality, you're investing in stronger security, reduced risk, better cyber hygiene and often lower cyber insurance premiums too.

The certification is the outcome. The real value is the security improvements made along the way.

How much would a cyber incident cost your business compared to preventing one?

A lot of businesses have Microsoft Defender switched on... but aren’t actually sure what it does.

Many assume it’s just antivirus. It isn’t.

In a business environment, Microsoft Defender can:
- Detect suspicious activity
- Protect devices from ransomware and malware
- Alert you to risky behaviour
- Help stop threats spreading across your network

The problem is, many businesses are only using a fraction of what it can do.
We’ve broken down what Microsoft Defender actually does and where it fits into your wider cyber security setup here https://marshallinfotech.com/microsoft-defender-what-it-actually-does-in-a-business-environment/

Microsoft Defender offers more than basic protection. Understand how it works in a business environment and what it actually covers.

Many small businesses are still storing files in random folders, on desktops, or in email chains.

Then someone leaves, a laptop breaks, or two people edit the same document... and suddenly there’s chaos.

(Feels weird to say this, but you’ll be surprised to learn that many don’t know this)
SharePoint can solve a lot of that, if it’s set up properly.
Done right, it gives your team:
• One place for files
• Better collaboration
• Controlled access to sensitive information
• Less time wasted hunting for documents
We’ve put together a simple step-by-step guide for SMEs looking to get started.

How confident are you in your current cyber security setup?

Many businesses rely on a combination of tools and policies, but without regular review, gaps can quickly appear.

A structured cyber security audit helps ensure that critical areas such as access control, data protection, patching, and incident response are all working as they should.

We’ve created a practical checklist outlining what businesses should be reviewing to strengthen their security posture.

Use this cyber security audit checklist to review access control, backups, email security, cloud settings and compliance risks across your business.

Cyber attacks rarely rely on complex techniques.

More often, they exploit small misconfigurations that go unnoticed within a business’s network.

These can include:
- Access permissions that are too broad
- Unused accounts that remain active
- Security settings that were never properly configured

Individually, they may seem minor. Together, they create opportunity.

In this article, we explain how attackers identify and exploit these gaps, and why regular network security audits are essential for modern businesses.

https://marshallinfotech.com/network-security-audit-how-attackers-exploit-small-misconfigurations/

At Marshall, we help businesses uncover these vulnerabilities and strengthen their security before they are exposed.

A network security audit helps identify misconfigurations attackers exploit, including firewall rules, Wi-Fi risks and insecure remote access settings.

Our founder Gary Marshall spent a few days this week connecting with peers from across the IT industry, sharing ideas and learning from leaders within the ConnectWise community.

Something that stood out during the event was “The Gap”, It perfectly summed up a challenge many businesses face when it comes to IT support.

What organisations expect:
Strategic advice, proactive guidance and technology leadership.

What they sometimes receive:
Reactive support when something goes wrong.

Closing that gap is something the industry continues to work towards, and events like IT Nation Connect Europe are a great place for MSPs to share knowledge, challenge thinking and raise the standard of service businesses should expect.

It was also great to hear insights from Dan Scott, Head of IT Nation and Evolve, alongside keynote speakers including Jake Humphrey and Damian Hughes.

Bringing ideas like these back to Marshall helps us continue improving the way we support the businesses we work with every day.
