Get Tech-Savvy, learn about AI Robotics and their applications!

Not too long in the future, you step out on the roads and find, pretty much straight out of the utopian sci-fi books and movies, zillions of cars driven by themselves manoeuvring through the busy roads. While some may argue that these autonomous cars will take away whatever is left of the sheer human bliss of long-distance driving, it still could turn out to be a reality. It's not just the fuel from the electric batteries that power these autonomous vehicles, but also myriad machine learning algorithms coupled with computer vision models that drive the vehicles forward (er backward and sideways too :-)). Behind the scene, hundreds of sensors and actuators power every single decision and contributes to every single movement of the vehicle. Well then, isn't it high time we said welcome to the wonderful world of AI Robotics?

AI Robotics is the latest addition of AI techniques, tools, algorithms and models offering autonomy and speed to the already-existing automation offered by robotic machines. So now we have robots that are not just automatic but also autonomous, meaning they just don't do complex and repetitive tasks but also learn constantly, make decisions, improve and improvise their work. Besides the hard-handling machines in heavy industries and destructive testing in military and defence, there are newer applications and use cases for this discipline. Increasingly robotic AI is making in-roads into the numerous real-world applications eg., surgical robots and clinical tests in healthcare to rovers in space exploration and beyond.

Get Tech-Savvy, learn about Agentic AI and the concepts behind Agents!

Just as we are getting used to the multitude of apps in our mobile phones and tablets, we are now introduced to the advent of 'agents', thanks to the widespread use of artificial intelligence. From dealing with projects, schedules & plans to eMails, reports and meetings, agentic AI is emerging as the preferred way to organising and getting our work done. World Economic Forum estimates that by 2030, AI agents will be used to automate 70% of the typical office tasks. These intelligent programs help teams and colleagues to be more productive by perceiving, planning, learning and acting on their behalf.

Agentic AI is essentially an artificial intelligence system/program, designed and developed to achieve a specific goal with no or little supervision. Agents are machine learning[ML] models that mimic the human decision-making, so that they can solve real-world problems, in real time. The critical success factors for these agents are autonomy, goal-driven behaviours and adaptation by learning from experience. No wonder then these agents are powering the AI innovation in multiple spheres of our physical world. These include the mundane activities e.g., central heating controls, spam filters, language translations and advanced tasks e.g., robotics, chatbots, autonomous scheduling, logistics planning etc.

Check your AIQ (Artificial Intelligence Quotient), take the TEXAVI quiz on agentic AI and the fundamental concepts and principles behind the artificially intelligent agents. Get Tech-Savvy, learn about using Generative AI in design & creative media!

In the recent times, if there is any mass-media technology that is creating more buzz and curiosity than web sites and mobile apps in their times, then that must be generative artificial intelligence. Popularly referred to as Gen AI, in short, the trending digital technology innovation has taken the world by storm. It is an effective outcome combining various machine learning technologies, tools, algorithms, models and underlying sets of datasets (referred to as Large Language Models or LLMs). It's used to create, edit and manipulate content in different types, formats, shapes, layouts, sizes and resolutions.

It won't be an exaggeration to say that Gen AI has contributed significantly to the democratisation of design. Gone are the days when we need to turn to the designers, creative and media professionals using high end design tools (such Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver etc). With Gen AI, anybody can ask via prompts to the tools (eg., Dall-e, Chat GPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Amazon Nova etc.) to generate images without the need for design or tool knowledge. Besides images, several of the Gen AI tools also help to create, edit and manipulate video and audio content too. The generated images, audio and video content can be tweaked and customised to suit the end use both formal and informal contexts i.e., posters, flyers, presentations, video clips, mails and social media posts to name a few. The GenAI tools are also widely used in other aspects of creative designs such as web design, user experience, product and industrial design, interior designing, architecture, films and movie making.

Get Tech-Savvy, learn about using artificial intelligence in innovation!

Ever came across a site where you experienced the price of a product differing vastly from one moment to another, one device to another and even one browser to another? And to top it off, got recommended by a few products which are better, more feature-rich and cheaper than the one you intended to purchase? These are only a few instances where artificial intelligence is used by businesses to deal with their product pricing strategies, recommendations and structure their products, services and solutions. It's a common occurrence nowadays with what we call as dynamic pricing based on predictive demand modelling, context-aware adjustments with real-time monitoring.

Besides the product sales strategies, use of AI algorithms and models is prevalent now with the early stages of innovation too. Businesses pursue innovation by deploying several AI technologies in rapid prototyping, product development and process improvement initiatives. The real-world usage of AI in innovation encompasses several use cases viz., scenario modelling, simulations, predictive modelling of customer and user behaviours, early detection of customer churn etc. No prizes for guessing that these result in the reduction of costs, increasing operational efficiencies, improvement of customer satisfaction resulting in an overall increase in profitability.

Get Tech-Savvy, learn about the legal and regulatory aspects in AI!

Come to think of it, artificial intelligence is akin to the cliched knife in the hands of humans. Much like the latter, AI could be put to use for the greater good of humanity or for the detriment of a whole community. What is food for some could be poison for others, so one needs a yardstick to sense-check the intent and impact from the conceptualisation, implementation and use of AI methodologies, algorithms, models and tools. This is where it is crucial to understand and apply the knowledge of what is correct, valid and fair in the larger context of legal and regulatory frameworks.

The underlying data to build AI algorithms e.g., large language models (LLMs) could be collected from users via suspect and illicit means without their consent. Also, there is a big question mark on the accountability of the decisions taken based on the AI algorithms. Just imagine what could happen if a product or service developed using AI not only fails to deliver the promised value proposition but also damages the consumers' assets and misleads them with spurious means. Not just these, but there are many areas within the purview of AI that could be benefitted with an understanding of the related legal frameworks. Besides legal aspects, there are also industry and sector-specific regulatory considerations for building, implementing and using AI agents and tools. These include the regulations around healthcare (eg., HIPAA, FDA), financial services and banking (SEC, FCA, FINRA, PRA) to name a few.

Check your AIQ (Artificial Intelligence Quotient), take the TEXAVI quiz on the legal and regulatory aspects in developing and using AI algorithms, agents and tools. Get Tech-Savvy, learn about the ethical, moral and social considerations in AI!

Dare I say that AI is now turning into as much a necessity as food, clothing, shelter and Internet access, though not necessarily in that order. It is a foregone conclusion that AI is here to stay and influence the ways we live, work and communicate. With their benevolent outcomes and a humane slant, numerous technologies, platforms, systems and tools have proven that artificial intelligence is most definitely a positive force to reckon with. While some others would argue that AI is out there destroying the careers, making people lazy and annihilating traditional industries and skills.

I strongly believe it is not all black and white, but there is an element of grey with the truth lying somewhere in between the two arguments, as far as influences of AI are concerned. Purely from an ethical perspective, there are multiple perspectives as far as the development and deployment of AI models, frameworks and technologies. These include transparency, fair use, intellectual property, conscious or unconscious bias, to name a few. When you put on a social lens, there are factors to be considered such as potential job displacement for some, up-skilling, cross-skilling, privacy and data protection etc. And then you have the inevitable aspects around the environmental impact and ecological aspects around the surges in energy consumption and climate change. Surely there are several angles to look at and take a stand with an informed judgement, either way.

Get Tech-Savvy, learn about the impacts of AI on our work and life!

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that artificial intelligence is 'democratising the use of technology' around the world. AI has brought a fresh breath of life into the otherwise mundane, intangible and often invisible world of technology. From healthcare to retail and from manufacturing to education and transport...every industry is touched by the power of artificial intelligence in one way or another. It also has a significant influence in how we are communicating, working and living. Look around and you will see practical ways AI is impacting us without our knowledge. For example, our mobiles are secured with personalised biometrics, traffic is managed effortlessly and seamlessly with complex models, diseases are being prognosed and prevented even before the symptoms start appearing.

These are just some of the current use cases but we are already witnessing many more instances of the power of artificial intelligence e.g., driverless cars, event booking, fraud prevention to name a few. Some may argue that the so called effects are not entirely positive and perhaps allude to the loss of the core human aspects. However, we cannot ignore that AI is here to stay and it is only a matter of time that we take it in our stride and use it in a way that enhances not just our ways of working but also quality of life too.

Check your AIQ (Artificial Intelligence Quotient), take the TEXAVI quiz on the fundamental concepts and principles around the impact of AI on our work, industries and sectors. Get Tech-Savvy with Python Programming!

I still remember to this day...during my MBA project back in 2000, I had to do statistical analysis of loads of data I collated from conducting a field exercise of market research. I chose SPSS, the popular statistical package (not much choice then) and I wrote several hundreds of lines of code to perform ANOVA, cluster analysis, and factor analysis using the Statistics knowledge I gained during my under-graduate program. It took me a few days to get to see the results and findings. Should I wish to do the same today, I don't even need to write a single line of code, just use Python and get the output in a few seconds. Such is the power of Python! However it's an entirely different topic to debate if trained and qualified statisticians (such as myself, though I don't claim to be an expert) would wish to use Python for Statistical analysis instead of the more advanced and specialised statistics/data science tools e.g., R or SAS.

If there is any programming language that has shaken the tech world as much as Java when it was initially introduced, then it most definitely is Python. Gone are the days when programmers and data scientists wrote thousands of lines of code to execute a simple statistical model e.g., linear regression, time series or cluster analysis. With its clean syntax, Python is considered as one of the simplest languages to write and read code and has become a natural choice for enthusiasts, learners and experts alike. From building simple statistical models to developing advanced artificial intelligence applications and workflows, Python is here to rule the roost, literally and figuratively :-)

Python has a comprehensive range of standard libraries that supports numerous functions, use cases and applications. No wonder then that it is being used in developing web applications, data analytics programs, creating prototypes, DevOps pipelines and Big Data initiatives, to name a few. It supports different types of programming paradigms such as procedural, functional and object-oriented programming. And more importantly, Python can be run on various platforms i.e., Windows, Mac, Linux and even Raspberry Pi.

Check your TQ (Tech Quotient), take the TEXAVI quiz on the fundamental concepts and principles in Python programming and data science. It's easy, quick and has only 15 MCQs, besides it is completely free too. Come on in, take the TEXAVI quiz and get the rich dividends of being tech-savvy!

Get Tech-Savvy on SQL!

Ask and you shall receive...so goes the old saying but this is relevant to the current times we are living in. In our incessant quest for wisdom or material stuff, we are constantly on the journey of gathering, learning and seeking the answers to things both known and unknown. The same is applicable to collecting, storing, managing and analysing information aka data. It's one thing to gathering data but it's quite another to know what you can do with it and listen to the amazing stories unfolding from the data. Slicing and dicing the data held in the database helps in understanding the actionable insights from the data. This is where the good old friend of all technology enthusiasts, SQL comes as a saviour.

Structured Querying Language, SQL in short, is a widely used industry standard language to investigate data. Using SQL's specific syntax and semantics in the form of commands and statements, we can interact and engage with data easily and quickly. Of course, the interrogation is primarily aimed at relational database management systems such as Microsoft SQL, MySQL and PostgreSQL to name a few. SQL is a powerful language that not only helps in creating databases and tables, but also in inserting and retrieving data from the database tables. Moreover, access privileges to the databases and data can also be managed using specific SQL commands and statements. SQL enables data wrangling and create data stories resulting in effective decision-making.
