🌐 This week we're demystifying ''hackers' with our Cyber Security Essentials series πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Well, this is not the easiest topic to sum up in a single post, but we'll try πŸ˜…

⚑️ Evolution of the Term 'hacker'

At the start, hacker used to mean someone who was a computing enthusiast, and part of the programming subculture online. By the 1990s, the media were using the term 'hacker' to describe cyber criminals, and the term stuck.

πŸ” Types of Hackers Targeting UK businesses:

1️⃣ Script Kiddies: Typically amateurs using pre-written scripts or tools to carry out attacks, for curiosity's sake or a moment of fame.

2️⃣ Hacktivists: Motivated by social, political, or environmental reasons, seeking to promote their agenda but can harm businesses if they believe they are opposed to their cause.

3️⃣ Cyber Criminals: Driven by financial gain, cyber criminals target businesses for extortion, data theft, or other monetizable activities, using ransomware attacks, for example.

4️⃣ State-Sponsored Hackers: Operating on behalf of governments to gather intelligence or carry out cyber warfare. The theft of UK business IP by foreign governments is an increasing concern since 2023.

🌐 This week we're demystifying 'IP spoofing' with our Cyber Security Essential series πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Let's dive in to the threats of IP spoofing for businesses πŸ’¦

πŸ” What is IP Spoofing?

IP Spoofing is when an attacker disguises their identity by manipulating the source address in a network packet. It falsifies the origin of data so it appears to be coming from a trusted source.

πŸ›‘ What are the warning signs?

They are hard to detect, and the source address is randomised making them hard to trace. The most common IP spoofing attacks are:

1️⃣ DDoS (distributed denial of service) which overwhelms a network or server with requests and crashes websites
2️⃣ Man-in-the-middle attacks, which intercepts communications between computers

🌐 This week we're demystifying gateways with our Cyber Security Essentials series πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Let's take a look at this common term that covers a lot of services πŸ‘€

πŸšͺ Understanding Gateways: Your Digital Guardians

Similar to firewalls, a gateway is a first line of defence for your digital domain. A gateway can be a device, a cloud service or an application.

🌟 Key Functions of a Gateway:

1️⃣ Traffic Monitoring and Filtering
2️⃣ URL Filtering
3️⃣ Malware and Threat Protection

🌐 This week we're demystifying firewalls with our Cyber Security Essentials series πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Let's take a look at this cornerstone of network security πŸ‘€

🚧 A firewall is a critical barrier between your internal network and the Internet. It's a virtual 'gatekeeper' inspecting and controlling the flow of data in and out of your network.

Key Functions of a Firewall:

1️⃣ Access Control: Firewalls regulate incoming and outgoing traffic, allowing or blocking data packets based on predetermined security rules.

2️⃣ Prevent Cyber Attacks: By monitoring and filtering network traffic, firewalls thwart various cyber threats, including malware, ransomware, and unauthorized access attempts.

3️⃣ Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Many industries have strict compliance requirements. Firewalls play a crucial role in meeting these standards, helping your business operate within legal and regulatory frameworks.

Not sure if your business has configured firewalls correctly? Book in a call with us and we can walk you through our support.

🌐 This week we're demystifying 'ethical hacking' with our Cyber Security Essential series πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Ever wondered how to stay one step ahead of cyber threats?

Ethical hackers, also known as "white hat" hackers, are cybersecurity professionals who use their skills to identify and rectify system vulnerabilities.

The term "white hat" originates from old Western movies where the hero wore a white hat, and the 'bad guys' wore black. 🀠

Choosing a good cybersecurity consultant means having an ethical hacker on your side to proactively assess your systems and stay ahead of criminal trends.

Did you know? From 2021 to 2022, the UK saw a staggering 23.5% increase in social media hacking incidents. πŸŒπŸ”

Here are three tips that take less than five minutes to put into action:
1️⃣ Use a Strong Password with Three Words
2️⃣ Use a Different Password for Each Platform
3️⃣ Turn On Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

Almost all social apps offer 2FA, check your settings for options to add a backup email or phone number or turn on biometric logins.

Strengthen your defence, stay informed, and let's build a safer online environment. If you'd like to find out how we can educate your workforce on cyber essentials, get in touch.

🌐 This week we're demystifying the Dark Web with our Cyber Security Essential series πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Let's shed some light on this nebulous digital realm! πŸ€”

πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ Definition: The dark web is hidden beneath the surface web we use every day. Unlike the websites we access through regular search engines, the dark web requires specific software and configurations to access.

πŸ” What's there? On one side, you've got privacy enthusiasts, journalists, and activists using the dark web to communicate securely. On the other side, there's also a marketplace for all kinds of goods and services, legal and otherwise.

⚠️ Caution: while your business may not knowingly have any presence on the dark web, you may find there is material relating to you that has been put there by others.

πŸ›‘οΈ Staying Safe: Protect yourself by working with cyber security professionals - like us - that provide dark web monitoring to check that your data is safe.
