Client Education: Muzzles

We’ve all been there in veterinary practice: someone hands you a dog to hold for a nail clip, all is well until the clippers appear and then suddenly you’re trying to find a way to let go of a writhing snarling beast without getting bitten in the process! You find a suitably sized muzzle but then have to somehow fit this onto an already stressed and snapping face before you can carry on with the necessary procedure.

How much of this stress could be avoided if the dog is used to wearing a muzzle and has one put on by their owner before their appointment?

We believe that client education in these sorts of areas is worth every bit of effort - many owners don’t realise how differently their normally friendly dogs may act with strange people doing what they perceive as strange/uncomfortable things; people can feel embarrassed to have their pet in a muzzle, and feel judged as bad owners with dangerous dogs.

We need to change the perception of the muzzle from a red flag over a dogs head to a signpost of thoughtfulness and consideration on the part of the owner.

We’ve written a blog post to help educate owners, have a read and let us know of your experiences:

Meet Reggie, VetConsult’s handsome newest member. He has been keeping us entertained over the last 6 months and we can’t quite believe how much he has grown! He joined Labradors Nilla and Berry in our support department, and has proved to be an interesting addition. Do you have dogs at work? (Not including patients 😂). Sometimes a quick dog walk provides a much needed break in the day and a breath of fresh air, something we wouldn’t take if only for ourselves!

Mobile vets find that while there are many benefits both for clients and for the vet in terms of quality of relationships, flexibility and optimal patient care, the administrative burden can be disproportionate to turnover.
However, developments in digital technologies can lighten the load. In particular, taking payments remotely can make it quick and easy for clients to pre-pay for appointments (reducing cancellations !!), sending medication invoices and treatment bills, and also to sending follow up reminders for outstanding bills.
By having effective digital systems in place vets can focus on the treatment side of things rather than worrying about bad debt and missed appointment slots. More..... bit.ly/3JErB4t

Independent veterinary practices can succeed in the digital world.

Telemedicine, online payments, digital communications, e-commerce, online scheduling, etc have all been evolving over the last few years. Covid has accelerated that evolution. These technology-driven trends may seem unwelcome in many ways to smaller practices, but simply ignoring them will not be a good idea for the long term health of the business.

Read about our thoughts on making technology work for you on our blog:

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and we've been thinking about how the pressures in a busy vet practice can be challenging for everyone. The seemingly irreconcilable mismatches between expectations & resources can push key members of the team to breaking point. Technology is one area that should take away stress, not add to it.
VetConsult can't give you more time with nature. We can't help you eat more healthily or get more sleep. But we can take some of the stress out of your day at work! Talk to us about online payments, remote consultations and/or online bookings. www.vetconsult.online

Vets for 'Fur Babies'
Millennials who are choosing to start families later are looking to fulfil their parental urges first with a "fur baby".
This has led to a rise in pet ownership amongst younger people with less experience of animal needs. This in turn is changing the clientele for vet practices and means that they are needing to step up a gear in terms of digital communications and online delivery of services.
As millennials prefer to look, book and pay online vets are starting to adopt some elements of telemedicine into their day to day operations. This trend has obviously been accelerated by Covid and there are now a great many ways of making this shift easily with video conferencing for triage, and online payment and booking software. The VetConsult platform pushes all the right buttons. International Women’s Day prompted us to reflect on the integral role of women in veterinary medicine. We found it interesting to note that our management team followed a similar 80:20 female to male ratio to that of veterinary students at the RVC, reported by team member Maddy who is a 4th year student there. How does this ratio compare to your practice?

Whilst studying, Maddy also works part time in a mixed practice in Sheffield and plays a key role in ensuring the software is easy to use and tailored to suit individual practices.

If you would like to chat to Maddy about how your practice could make the most out of taking payments and/or bookings online, send us an email at [email protected]

Cloud based technologies will help lighten the load for rural vets as well as veterinary practices in towns. The trouble is that it is sometimes hard to set aside the time needed to switch to more effective ways of doing things. Allowing animal owners to book and pay for appointments online, as well as taking payments and part payments via a simple text message to the client's phone will go some way to give young vets a sense of control and allow them to focus on more animal focused activities rather than on admin. The good news is that the younger generation are more at home with technology than the older practice owners.

A shortage of vets is leading to succession issues in rural practices and the problem needs to be addressed, it has been warned.
