How is the Meningitis B vaccine actually made and why did it only arrive on the National Immunisation service in 2015?

The vaccine uses recombinant protein technology. Scientists identified four key proteins on the surface of the meningococcal B bacteria that the immune system can recognise.

This is fundamentally different from older vaccines, which typically used the bacteria’s polysaccharide (sugar) coat — but MenB’s sugar coat is nearly identical to a protein found in human brain tissue, making that approach dangerous.

This was the core scientific challenge — MenB’s surface was uniquely difficult to target without risking an autoimmune response. The breakthrough came from a technique called reverse vaccinology.

Meningitis outbreak in Kent, UK at the moment. Here is everything you need to know about the vaccinations.

Preventative antibiotics (also called prophylaxis) are being offered to anyone who went to Club Chemistry in Canterbury, Kent on 5, 6 or 7 March and to people who are close contacts of those who are confirmed or suspected to have meningitis.

If you have been offered preventative antibiotics, it is strongly recommended that you take them promptly. There are sufficient antibiotic stocks at the university, in local hospitals, and with the ambulance service.

If you were at Club Chemistry on 5, 6 or 7 March, or if you have had close contact with someone who has confirmed or suspected meningitis, and have since returned home, you can contact your local GP to get antibiotics wherever you are in the UK.

A meningitis patient helpline, run by UKHSA, is now available. Patients can call 0344 225 3861, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, if they have no symptoms but are concerned they have been in contact with a confirmed case, or have a general enquiry.
