Why the name Geissen? Did you know Geissen means Goats in Germany?
We get asked this a lot. So, a little history for you:
The oldest known instruments in the world are the Geisenklosterle Flutes. They were found in a cave of that name which is in Blaubeuren in Germany. I’ve never been but based on the pictures on the internet, it looks a very beautiful town nestled in the mountains in South Germany.
Three instruments were found, one made from Mammoth Ivory and two from mute swans (again, checking the internet, these look like swans to me so don’t ask me the difference). These instruments are between 42,000 and 43,000 years old and are purported to be used by the oldest modern humans in Europe. Archaeologists believe that instruments, such as these flutes, aided early humans to develop bonds within large groups, thus paving the way for our success as a species.
So why not name our device after the G.O.A.T. advancements in human civilisation, especially as we want to continue and improve the bonds musical instruments bring society.
As an aside, Slovenians will claim the oldest instrument was a flute found in Cerkno, Slovenia which is 43,100 years old. This may have been just a bone chewed by Hyenas. It is also claimed it was made by Neanderthals and is the only potential evidence of this.
In true start-up fashion, we are always ready to pivot so if you think you can come up with a better name please post it in the comments and who knows, we may just go with it. Geisseny Mac Geisseny Face was already suggested!
