A career change can leave someone with years of valuable experience wondering whether an employer will give them a chance.

They may have led teams, solved difficult problems or helped a business through change. Yet when they apply for a role in a different industry, the conversation can focus on the experience they haven’t got.

That’s why Protip UK is supporting The Pivot Conference as a sponsor and recruitment partner.

We want to encourage more thoughtful conversations about what people can bring to a role. Relevant experience matters, and some moves will require new skills. But there is also value in taking the time to understand how someone’s existing knowledge could help a different business.

For employers, that means looking carefully at which requirements are essential and where there is room for someone to learn. For professionals considering a move, it means being able to explain how their experience could be useful in a new setting.

We’re looking forward to meeting attendees, hearing what they’ve achieved and understanding what they want to do next.

We’re pleased to be supporting The Pivot Conference as both a sponsor and its recruitment partner.

On 30 October in London, experienced professionals will come together to explore their next career move and how their skills could open doors in a different role or industry.

At Protip, we know a job title only tells part of someone’s story. The problems they’ve solved, the teams they’ve supported and the experience they’ve gained can be valuable in places they haven’t yet considered.

We’re looking forward to meeting attendees, hearing their stories and talking about the opportunities they’re exploring.

Our founder, Peter Ishak, will also be speaking about his own career across engineering, operations, product management and entrepreneurship.

Thinking about your next move? We’d love to see you there.

When a team is stretched, hiring another person can feel like the obvious next step.

Before opening the role, I’d want to understand where the pressure is coming from. Is the workload growing? Is a particular skill missing? Are people spending too much time chasing decisions or working around unclear responsibilities?

My background in engineering, operations and product management has shaped how I approach these conversations. I want to understand the work, where it gets held up and what someone joining the team would be expected to improve.

That helps define the experience needed, whether the requirement is permanent or temporary, and how the person will be supported once they join.

For me, this is an important part of talent consulting. A useful hiring brief gives everyone a clear understanding of why the role exists and what success would look like.

What would you want your next hire to help your team achieve?

A growing company can outgrow a job description very quickly.

The person you hire today may join a team of five.

A year later, that team could be twenty.

Processes will change.

Responsibilities will expand.

New problems will appear that weren't mentioned anywhere in the original brief.

That's why, when we're supporting a growing business, we look beyond whether someone can simply do the job today.

Can they adapt as the business changes?

Are they comfortable taking ownership?

Can they work without every process already being defined?

Do they have the curiosity to learn what they don't know?

And importantly, do they actually want to work in that kind of environment?

Someone can be excellent at their job and still be wrong for the stage of the company.

The opposite can also be true.

A candidate may not tick every box on the job description, but their ability to learn, adapt and take ownership could make them far more valuable as the business grows.

Skills matter.

Experience matters.

But understanding where the business is going matters too.

Because you're not only hiring for the vacancy you have today.

You're hiring someone who may help shape what the company becomes next.

We're proud to have been recognised by Digital Reference as one of its Best Product Management Consulting Services in the UK for 2026.

Product consulting has an important place in our story.
Our Founder & CEO, Peter Ishak, spent years working across software engineering, global operations, programme management and Product Management before founding Protip UK.

That experience continues to influence how we approach consulting today.

We don't believe Product Management is about creating longer roadmaps or delivering more features.

It's about understanding the problem, setting the right priorities and bringing people, technology and business needs together to deliver measurable value.

We're also pleased to see Peter recognised by Digital Reference as a Founder to Watch in 2026 for Product Management Consulting.

Thank you to Digital Reference for the recognition, and congratulations to the other businesses and product leaders featured.

Finding the right candidate is only part of a successful hire.

A lot can change between the first interview and the signed offer.

A candidate may have other opportunities.

Expectations can shift.

Concerns can emerge after an interview.

The client may discover something they need to explore further.

And sometimes what looks like a perfect match on paper simply isn't right once both sides meet.

That's why our role doesn't stop when we make an introduction.

At Protip UK, we stay involved throughout the process, speaking openly with both the client and candidate, understanding where they stand and addressing potential issues early.

But there's an important distinction.

Our job isn't to convince a candidate to accept a role or push a client towards a hire.

It's to make sure both sides have the information they need to make the right decision.

If the answer is yes, we help move things forward.

If the answer is no, we'd rather understand why and continue the search.

A placement isn't successful simply because an offer was accepted.

It needs to be the right hire for the business and the right move for the person.

That's the standard we work towards.

More CVs don't necessarily create better hiring decisions.

Every unsuitable candidate costs time for the hiring manager, the interview team and the candidate themselves.

That's why we'd rather build a smaller, highly relevant shortlist than create volume for the sake of activity.

Understand the brief.

Research the market.

Screen properly.

Introduce people who genuinely deserve a conversation.

It's an approach our clients consistently recognise in their feedback to us.

Every CV should earn its place on the shortlist.

That's precision recruitment.

A job description is a starting point.

Not always the final answer.

Before beginning a search, we want to understand why the role exists, what the person needs to achieve and which requirements genuinely matter.

Sometimes those conversations change the brief.

And that's a good thing.

A recruitment partner shouldn't simply take instructions and send CVs.

They should bring market knowledge, challenge assumptions when necessary and help the client make a better hiring decision.

At Protip UK, that's what we mean by consultative recruitment.
