While some founders wake up at 5am to hit the gym before their meetings start, founders like Grace Carter wake up at 5am to feed their baby.

In a post that went viral, entrepreneur and mother of two Grace Carter shared an honest insight into her working day: where she juggles the responsibilities of running a growing agency, Aphra, with the tasks of being a mother to two young girls.

Speaking honestly about the guilt of entertaining her kids with morning TV, the anxiety around the cost of childcare, and the stress of managing her responsibilities as a CEO alongside domestic duties: her post went viral as many working mothers saw themselves reflected in her testimony.

What was devastating to see alongside comments of gratitude for her vulnerability and honesty, were the comments attacking her.

Some comments chided her for complaining. Reminded her she had only herself to blame. Suggested she give up work.

What her honest reflections show us is that the playing field is not level. That we all need to lean in to our empathy and compassion when it comes to how we view leaders who are caregivers. That we have a long way to go before we accept the realities facing working mothers.

In a Forbes article about biases in venture capital, Deena Shakir asks us to examine the startup world’s history of ‘mandozing’ over women’s achievements.

She acknowledges how commonplace it is to convene a group of women in a safe space and hear the horror stories swapped.

From being passed up for opportunities for “not playing nice”…

To far more creepy and even violent attacks…

Women brave enough to navigate the startup ecosystem must have the thickest of skin in order to survive.

Many don’t: from burnout to worse realities: women founders, investors and operators are always exiting the ecosystem. Sometimes by choice. Sometimes by force.

Serena Williams made a good point when she said:

“The Black female founder begins her fundraising journey already down a match point.

Black women face a unique set of challenges colored by misconceptions of both race and gender.”

So how can startups and venture capital make the world a better place, when members of the global majority don’t have a say in what happens?

Until bias awareness levels up… it will be hard to see lasting, positive, change.

What industry can say it fully supports women?

What industry strives to ensure women are safe at work?

In 2023, Goldman Sachs agreed to pay $215 million to settle a class action lawsuit filed more than a decade ago by female staffers who alleged gender-based pay discrimination as well as sexual harassment.

Earlier this year Stephanie Cohen, an investment banking star who was once thought to be on track to become the first female CEO of Goldman Sachs, announced she was leaving the firm.

From finance to tech to law to the list goes on: we know that industries designed for women to succeed in are few and far between.

Many women leaders in our community share the challenges they face as minorities in male-dominated fields.

From the obvious threats like harassment and assault, to the insidious everyday acts of being passed up for opportunities and promotions: there’s a long way to go before we reach a level playing field.

Can we find the courage to spark up the necessary conversations about how bias shows up in the workplace?

Do we have the guts to call out discrimination in the moment?

Do we dare challenge the “bad apples” who are often defended, or worse still, rewarded?

If teams really want to change: they must lean into the messy world of confrontation.

Change isn’t really possible without discomfort.

The research is in: women entering the workforce are feeling pessimistic about their chances of success.

According to a CFA Institute study of women in the UK aged 18 - 25, women’s top three professional concerns are:

Lack of jobs (16%)

Low pay (14%)

Feeling under-qualified (11%)

Women also admitted feeling less confident in knowing what employers are looking for.

1 in 4 (29%) female respondents stating they were not confident, compared to 22% of men.

Here are some actionable ways to feel more positive about your future work prospects:

Connect with communities: your network is your net worth so build like-minded connections through online and IRL communities.

Make a list of all your wins and achievements: gather the evidence of how capable you are.

Challenge your inner critic: next time you’re being self-critical pay yourself a compliment to balance it out.

Calling all women professionals.

Has there ever been a point in your career where your lack of progress was blamed on a lack of confidence?

Research in the Harvard Business Review shows that women are often told to “lean in” or “be more confident”… even when we *are* leaning in and being confident.

There’s a harmful narrative pervasive in the workplace that it’s our confidence which holds us back: not the daily assaults, doubts or nasty remarks hurled in our direction.

Research on likeability bias - also known as the likeability penalty - shows us that when women do act assertively at work e.g.

Asking for promotions.

Asking for pay rises.

Speaking up to challenge e.g. when we’re interrupted or our ideas are stolen...

We are not looked upon favourably. In fact, we’re seen as “aggressive”.

This is due to outdated gender stereotypes where we’re expected to be caregivers not confident humans who will - like it or not - have to boss you around from time to time.

Next time you find yourself wanting to spark up a conversation about someone’s confidence, take a beat instead…

What could be stopping talented women on your team from showing up as their authentic selves?

Confidence looks different on different people.

Vulnerability, for instance, takes a lot of courage.

When I am confident, I am brave enough to wear my heart on my sleeve and express the emotions I’m feeling.

Would you call that confident?

Sara Mauskopf, CEO and co-founder of Winnie, said, “We love to celebrate the rise of female-founded companies... until they rise too far.”

Are we ready to celebrate bold, accomplished women the way we do men?

The female founder takedowns commonly reported in the press suggest we are not.

Why do we still struggle to celebrate women who display personality traits which gender stereotypes assign to men?

Women who start businesses tend to be:

Brave.

Audacious.

Opinionated.

And in a working world where women professionals are still judged on the basis of being “sex objects” or “caregivers”… many struggle to embrace women as pioneering leaders.

Looking to the future, are we willing to challenge gender stereotypes? And stereotypes in general? It’s not easy. It’s often awkward. But it’s important.

There’s no “right” way to show up as a woman in society.

Just like there’s no “right” way to show up as ANY identity.

Individuals have the right to be themselves: without facing prejudice, judgement and discrimination.

Let’s embrace our unique strengths instead of spending energy tearing down people who don’t fit into the boxes we expect them to.
