The recent opening of Birchwood - The Conduit is a synergy of a collective vision of the Conduit Club’s community of changemakers, Levy’s purpose for people and planet and Will Devlin drive and passion for sustainable farming and cooking. We simply brought it to life.
This naturally inspired our material choices, and where we could, we kept the existing finishes.
One of our favourite examples was the Rey chair, a collaboration of furniture design between HAY and Dietker originally designed in 1971. The theory behind the design of the chair, is of collaboration; simple components put together in an innovative way, and all chairs are made from sustainable wood.
Along the kitchen pass, we used a stunning reclaimed timber terrazzo made from wood offcuts; sustainable and a beautiful feature in the restaurant. Graphenstone Paints UK lime wash was used on the walls which is an air-purifying paint finish. This is a brand new product to the UK as of this year and gives a textured end-result which is a refreshing change from any matt or gloss finish.
The stone flooring and exposed heritage brick walls all remained, and we introduced reclaimed veneer for table tops.
Another example of a brilliant sustainable finish we used in this project was the counter tops made from matterpieces Demolition waste; a product crafted by architects who searched for more sustainable finishes, and created their own construction waste surface for counter tops. Their mission at Matterport was to create a circular economy between construction and demolition waste back into new uses.
