West End Dental got in touch with us 🦷 during the final stages of their new practice fit-out, needing a full IT setup covering networking, security and connectivity across the whole building.

How old is your business IT? 💻

Most businesses know the age of their company vehicles... but not their computers, network equipment or Wi-Fi.

The truth is, ageing IT doesn't always fail overnight. Instead, it gradually becomes slower, less secure and more expensive to maintain.

As a general guide:
🟢 **0–2 years** – Modern, secure and performing well.
🟡 **3–5 years** – Still capable, but worth reviewing for performance, security updates and future planning.
🔴 **6+ years** – Increased risk of hardware failure, slower performance, compatibility issues and higher maintenance costs.

Older equipment doesn't automatically need replacing, but it's important to understand the risks before they become costly problems.

A simple review of your current IT can identify opportunities to improve performance, strengthen security and plan upgrades before issues affect your business.

Something we see regularly when visiting a new client for the first time. ⚠️

The wireless network was set up years ago by whoever installed the broadband. The router password has never been changed. There is no guest network. Every device in the building - laptops, phones, printers, smart TVs - sits on the same flat network with no separation between them.

It is extremely common. It is also a genuine risk.

A poorly configured wireless network gives an attacker an easy entry point into your business. The checklist in the graphic covers the basics. None of it requires enterprise-level kit. It just requires someone to actually look at it. 🔍

Every device - laptops, phones, printers, smart TVs - is connected to the same network with no separation between them.None of this is the business owner's fault. It is just how things get set up when nobody has looked at it properly.The problem is that an unsecured Wi-Fi network is one of the easiest ways for an attacker to get a foothold in your business. Once they are on your network, they can see traffic, access shared drives, and in some cases move across to other devices.
