The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is a national facility for looking after and distributing data concerning the marine environment. We deal with biological, chemical, physical and geophysical data. Our databases contain measurements of nearly 22,000 different variables. Many of our staff have direct experience of marine data collection and analysis. They work alongside information technology specialists to ensure that data are documented and stored for current and future use.

Through the NERC Environmental Data Service (EDS) High5 for AI project, weโ€™ve boosted access to key environmental datasets and made them more AI-ready. Highlights include:
๐ŸŒŠ Our CTD profile data now available via ERDDAP
๐Ÿชจ National Geographic Data Centre (NGDC) Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for offshore samples, mapping, and boreholes
๐ŸŒ Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA) promoting European Space Agency (ESA) soil moisture data with improved discovery via SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC)
๐ŸŒฑ Environmental Information Data Centre (EIDC) enabling Machine-Learning-ready landcover data workflows
Weโ€™ve also adopted the Croissant metadata standard, helping datasets integrate seamlessly into AI and machine learning pipelines - saving time and improving usability.
This work standardises access across data centres, making it easier to combine datasets, run analyses, and answer big environmental questions.

We're all set at the National Oceanography Centre Open Day for schools today! ๐Ÿฉต๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒ

Come and visit the BODC stand to explore how ocean data powers discoveries beneath the waves. ๐ŸŒŠ
Lots of interactive demos and plenty to discover. From the likes of the 'Captain Data' game, jigsaws, the new 2026 GEBCO grid and a poster asking about the NOC mission networks. ๐ŸŽฎ ๐Ÿงฉ
Make sure you stop by and check it out this Sunday when it opens up to the public! ๐Ÿฉต
It's always amazing to see so many students getting involved and asking brilliant questions... ๐Ÿ’ก

Happy World Ocean Day, 2026! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’™
Our oceans connect us, regulate our climate, and sustain life on Earth, but understanding them is key to protecting them.
At BODC we celebrate World Ocean Day everyday as we play a vital role in managing and safeguarding marine data, ensuring that scientists, policymakers, and communities have access to trusted ocean information for informed decision-making.
From long-term environmental monitoring to supporting global research, BODC helps turn data into knowledge that drives ocean sustainability.
This , we celebrate the power of data in protecting our blue planet. ๐ŸŒŠ

The BODC Argo team met with the wider UK Argo community at National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, this week for the annual UK Argo meeting. ๐ŸŒ ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ ๐ŸŒŠ

Discussions ranged from future float deployments and data management developments to emerging scientific priorities with the aim of continuously driving the UK Argo programme forward. ๐ŸŒŸ

This was a really valuable opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from NOC, the Met Office, and the University of Southampton.๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ GEBCO 2026 Grid Published

With almost 5 million square kilometres of data added over the past year, the new GEBCO_2026 grid marks 28.7% of the global ocean floor mapped to date. The latest update represents approximately 104 million square kilometres of mapped seabed โ€“ an area equivalent to more than two-thirds of the Earthโ€™s land surface!

The GEBCO_2026 grid has been developed through The Nippon Foundationโ€“GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, a collaboration between The Nippon Foundation and GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans, under the auspices of International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.

Happy ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒŠ

With over 70% of Earth covered by ocean, we of course recognise the vital role that trusted ocean data plays in understanding and protecting our planet. We continue to curate and deliver longโ€‘term marine data to support science, policy, and sustainable decisionโ€‘making โ€” from climate change research to ocean conservation.
By ensuring marine data are preserved, accessible, and reusable, we help turn observations into insight and insight into action for a healthier Earth.
