What would happen if you couldn’t access your data tomorrow?

That was the question I asked during a recent Business IT Confidence Check discovery meeting and the answer came back almost immediately:

“Well, excuse my French, but we’d be f***ed.”

I suspect a lot of business owners would give a very similar answer.

Most businesses rely heavily on technology, but very few business owners have the time to regularly check whether everything behind the scenes is working exactly as they believe it is.

Backups are assumed to be working, security is assumed to be covered and recovery plans are assumed to exist because nobody has been told otherwise.

The problem is that assumptions and confidence can look remarkably similar until the day they’re tested.

That’s what I’ve started calling The Assumption Gap. It’s the gap between what we believe is happening and what is actually happening.

Sometimes that gap is tiny. Sometimes it’s the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major business problem.

The businesses that tend to be in the strongest position aren’t necessarily the ones spending the most money on technology. They’re the ones that regularly replace assumptions with evidence and uncertainty with clarity.

So I’ll leave you with the same question I asked during that meeting:

What would happen if you couldn’t access your data tomorrow?
