If you only do one thing for your IT security this month, do this.

𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁.

MFA is the thing that asks for a code on your phone after you put your password in. It sounds small. It is not. Microsoft's own data shows it stops more than 99 percent of account compromises.

Three things worth knowing:

1. It is free. Every Microsoft 365 licence includes it.

2. It takes about 15 minutes to set up for a typical small team.

3. The reason it is not switched on in most businesses I audit is not cost or complexity. It is that nobody has got round to it.

Get round to it.

If you are not sure how, ask whoever looks after your IT to switch it on for every account today. If you do not have anyone looking after your IT, that is a separate conversation worth having.

"Microsoft handles the backup though, right?"

Here's what they actually do, and what they don't.

What Microsoft protects:
- The platform itself stays running
- A short recovery window for deleted items (around 30 days for email, 93 days for OneDrive and SharePoint)
- The infrastructure your data sits on

What Microsoft does not protect:
- Anything deleted longer than that recovery window
- Files lost to ransomware that have synced to the cloud
- Data lost when a staff member leaves and their account is closed
- Anything corrupted by a dodgy app or a mistaken bulk action

The gap between what people assume and what is actually covered is where businesses get caught out.

𝗥𝘂𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 — A quiet office is the perfect time to let those OS and security updates run. Come back to a fully patched, protected setup.
𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 — IT equipment and heatwaves don't mix. Close blinds, check ventilation, and keep your kit cool while you're away.
