What is Software as a Service, and how can it help your business?
Software as a Service, often called SaaS, is software that is accessed online rather than installed on an individual computer. Familiar examples include cloud-based booking systems, customer portals, project management tools and subscription platforms. Because the system is online, it can be accessed securely from different locations and updated as the business grows.
We are currently in the early stages of building a new website for a client that will bring together several integrated services and retrieve information from multiple third-party databases.
But what does that actually mean?
An integrated service is when different pieces of software are connected so they can work together. Instead of staff repeatedly copying information between systems, the website can help manage the process automatically.
An API, or Application Programming Interface, allows one system to request information or perform an action in another system. You can think of it as a secure messenger that carries a request between two applications and returns the required response.
A third-party database is a source of information managed by another company or service. By connecting to multiple databases, a website can gather relevant information from several sources and present it to the user in one convenient place.
A webhook allows one system to notify another as soon as something happens. For example, when a booking is made, a payment is received or a record is updated, a webhook can immediately trigger the next action without someone having to check manually.
Connecting these technologies can turn a website into much more than an online brochure. It can become a powerful business tool that improves efficiency, reduces repetitive administration and creates a smoother experience for both employees and customers.
