Today’s audition was pure music joy! 🎶

My client arrived looking to upgrade his beloved legacy Mission PCM4000 — a classic British CD player from the mid-80s, known for its solid metal chassis, 16-bit 4× oversampling with twin Philips TDA1541 DACs, and that refined, musical character that made it a high-end contender in its day.

We spent a couple of hours spinning an incredibly eclectic mix of music — everything from Texas, Guns and Roses, Sting and Paul Simon plus many others— listening carefully and comparing.

The clear winner? The stunning new Gold Note CD-5.2.

This elegant Italian beauty features a precision Stream Unlimited tray-loading mechanism, the excellent AKM AK4493 DAC, and a sleek black anodised aluminium chassis with intuitive touchscreen. It’s compact, versatile, and delivers stunning transparency, dynamics, and natural musical flow.

What an incredible visit this week for both my brother Paul McCaffrey 🇬🇧 BATTLERIGS and myself to Chord Company in Amesbury! 🙌

It was truly amazing to go behind the scenes and see the meticulous manufacturing processes that go into every cable. Even more special was getting hands-on and building some of our own – we got to craft Epic XL Speaker Cable and Signature XL Speaker Cable. Such a privilege!

Fun fact: The Chord Company has been designing and hand-building award-winning cables right here in England since 1985, with their HQ just a stone’s throw from Stonehenge. Their very first prototype was called the Chrysalis Cable – and they’ve been refining the craft ever since.

Huge thanks to the entire Chord Company team for the superb hospitality and for sharing their passion and expertise so generously. An unforgettable experience!
