Your business has changed over the years. Has your branding kept up? đŸ€”

Think back to when your business first started.

Chances are, things looked a little different. Perhaps you had fewer services, a smaller team, different customers or an office where the meeting room doubled as the storage cupboard.

Fast forward a few years and your business might be almost unrecognisable.

You've grown, adapted, learned a few lessons along the way and probably added a service or two that wasn't even on the original plan.

But is your branding still telling the same story it did ten years ago?

It's surprisingly easy for a business to evolve while its branding stays firmly stuck in the past.

And that can mean potential customers aren't getting the full picture of who you are or what you offer today.

The good news? You don't necessarily need to throw everything out and start again.

Sometimes a thoughtful refresh is all it takes to bring your branding back in line with the business you've become.

After all, there's nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia. But your branding probably shouldn't be living in the same decade as your old office fax machine. 📠

Ever stood in the supermarket staring at 47 different types of toothpaste and suddenly forgotten what you actually came in for? đŸȘ„

Whitening, sensitive, extra fresh, triple action, advanced protection
all you wanted was clean teeth!

The same thing can happen when customers are trying to choose a product or service.

Too many options, too much information or a message that takes a degree in detective work to understand can make even the simplest decision feel complicated.

And when people have to work too hard to figure something out, there's a good chance they'll just move on.

That's where good design earns its keep.

Clear packaging, well-structured information and thoughtful branding can help people understand what they're looking at, find what they need and feel confident in their decision.

Because sometimes the best way to sell more isn't to say more.

It's to make choosing easier.

Now, if someone could just explain why we need quite so many types of toothpaste

Would you choose you?

Imagine coming across your own business for the very first time.

You don’t know the team. You’ve never used the service. You’ve got no idea how much experience sits behind it.

All you’ve got is the website, the branding, a few Google reviews, some social posts and whatever else you find along the way.

Would you be impressed?

Would you understand why you should choose this business over another one?

Would you even put it on the shortlist?

It’s tricky to see your own business the way everyone else does because you already know all the good stuff.

That’s why looking from the outside in forms part of our SPARKℱ process – seeing what potential customers actually see, rather than what we assume they know.

So
 would you choose you? 👀

Here’s a slightly uncomfortable thought

Your competitors might not actually be better than you.

They might just look like they are.

Potential customers don’t know what it’s like to work with you yet. They don’t know how experienced your team is, how good your service is, or how much you care about getting things right.

All they’ve got to go on is what they can see.

And if a competitor looks more professional, explains what they do more clearly and generally gives a better first impression, it’s very easy to assume they’re the better choice.

Even if you know they’re not. 😉

Being great at what you do matters.

But if nobody can tell from the outside, you might be making it far too easy for someone else to get picked.

Ever looked at something and thought, “I’m not sure why
 but this just feels right”?

That’s usually down to the little design details most people never spot — the spacing that makes everything calm, the colours that put you at ease, the layout that quietly guides you.

Good design doesn’t shout for attention. It just makes life feel a bit easier without you even realising why.

“Nobody reads anything.”

We hear this quite a lot.

And to be fair, nobody’s sitting down with your brochure and a cup of tea ready to enjoy it cover to cover.

But people absolutely do read things when they need something.

They’ll look for the price. The opening times. The dimensions. The ingredients. The answer to that one very specific question they’ve got before they decide whether to buy.

The trick isn’t getting everybody to read every single word.

It’s making sure they can find the bit they DO want without needing a map and a packed lunch.

That’s where good design comes in.

Clear hierarchy, sensible layouts and information in the places people naturally expect to find it.

Because sometimes the most useful thing design can do is simply make something easier.

We promise we’re not being awkward.

Well
 not deliberately, anyway.

Sometimes a client will ask us to make something bigger. Add another colour. Squeeze another bit of information in. Move something over a bit.

And sometimes we’ll say, “We could
 but
”

That “but” is quite an important part of our job.

Because we’re not here to simply do exactly what we’re told and send the artwork back. If we think something will make the design harder to read, less effective or just not quite work, we’ll say so.

We might suggest another way of doing it. We might explain why we’ve done something the way we have. Occasionally, we might even put up a little bit of a fight.

Nicely, obviously. We’re not monsters.

Because ultimately, you’re paying us for our judgement as well as our ability to move things around on a screen.
