Bloody updates again! 🤦‍♂️

“Why the hell do I need to keep updating everything?”

Windows wants an update.
Your phone wants an update.
Chrome wants an update.
Teams wants an update.

Even the bloody printer probably wants one, although it still won’t print afterwards.

I know I know. Updates are annoying.

But there’s a reason they keep coming.

Updates don’t just give you new features. They fix security weaknesses that cyber criminals can use to get into your systems.

And once a security flaw becomes known, leaving your device unpatched is a bit like discovering your back door doesn’t lock and thinking:

“I’ll sort that out next month.”

So yes, updates are a pain in the backside.

But ransomware is considerably more annoying.

Keep your devices updated. And if you run a business, don’t just *hope* your staff are doing it.

What actually is cyber awareness training… and why does your business need it?

Put simply, it’s teaching your staff how to spot the things that could put your business at risk.

Things like:

• A convincing phishing email
• A fake Microsoft 365 login page
• A supplier suddenly asking you to pay into a different bank account
• A dodgy attachment
• Someone pretending to be the boss asking for an urgent payment
• AI-generated emails that look frighteningly genuine

Because you can spend thousands protecting your IT, but criminals know there’s often an easier way in…

Your people.

Good cyber awareness training isn’t about turning everyone into cyber security experts.

It’s about creating that little voice in their head that says:

“Hang on… something doesn’t look right here.”

Then making sure they know what to do next.

And mentioning cyber security once a year in a team meeting doesn’t count. 😂

Regular training and simulated phishing tests help build good habits.

When I first started going bald, I obviously wanted to keep my hair.

I did try to protect what I had left.

Different shampoos. Treatments. Vitamins etc obviously none of them worked.

The problem?

I started worrying about protecting it when it was already disappearing.

And weirdly, that reminds me of how some businesses treat cyber security.

We speak to businesses all the time who only start taking cyber security seriously after something has happened.

An email account gets hacked.
Someone clicks a dodgy link.
Money gets transferred to the wrong account.
Data gets stolen.

Then suddenly, cyber security becomes VERY important.

The best time to protect something is before you start losing it.

MFA. Backups. Security updates. Cyber awareness training. Proper monitoring.

They might not seem exciting when everything is working.

But once your business gets attacked, you can’t always undo the damage.

“We just share a Microsoft 365 login between a few people. It saves us buying extra licences and Microsoft say you can add it to 5 devices right?.”

Sharing licenses might save you a few quid.

But it can create a much bigger problem.

When several people share the same Microsoft 365 account:

• You don’t really know who accessed what
• You don’t know who deleted or changed something
• MFA becomes messy
• Someone leaving means changing passwords for everyone
• Security logs become far less useful
• One compromised password can affect multiple people
• Its also violates Microsoft's licensing terms

And if that shared account has access to sensitive emails, files or customer information, the risk gets even bigger.

Every person should have their OWN ACCOUNT, their own login and the correct licence for what they need.
Yes, it costs a little more.

But so does trying to work out which of the four people using `accounts@` clicked the dodgy invoice link.

Sharing licenses is bit like trying to share the last custard cream between 4 people.
…nobody’s really getting a full Custard Cream experience and they will all be left dissapointed.
