Who’s responsible for the hearing loop at each of your sites?

Across a group of clinics, offices or public buildings, “we have a loop” is only the starting point. Someone needs to know where it is, when it was checked and what happens if a fault is reported.

For multi-site hearing-loop maintenance, we recommend a simple shared register covering:
- Each system’s location and intended listening area.
- A named staff contact for routine listening checks.
- The latest service report and next planned service date.
- Outstanding faults, who is dealing with them and when they were resolved.
RNID recommends maintenance every 12 months. Regular staff listening checks are important between visits; they don’t replace measured performance testing to IEC 60118-4.

Keep the instructions and loop listener somewhere staff can actually find them. A clear handover matters when teams change.

A green power light is not a hearing-loop service.

This is a real reception counter hearing loop photographed during a recent service visit at a London commercial property.

A useful service checks the microphone and audio path, inspects the amplifier and connections, listens at the normal customer position and takes instrument measurements. IEC 60118-4 covers important AFILS performance criteria, including magnetic field strength, signal-to-noise ratio and frequency response.

This system passed its audio check, and the instrument results were recorded for the client — useful evidence rather than simply noting that the equipment switched on.

RNID recommends maintaining hearing loops every 12 months. If your reception induction loop is due a check, we can test, service and document it properly.

A hotel bedroom hearing loop and a fire-alarm warning do two different jobs.

An in-room induction loop can be connected to the television audio, allowing a guest with a compatible hearing aid or cochlear implant to listen using their telecoil or T-setting. The audio connection, source selection and coverage should be tested—not assumed to work because equipment is fitted.

Emergency warning is separate. Accessible hotel-bedroom planning should confirm how a deaf or hard-of-hearing guest will be alerted, particularly while asleep. A hearing loop must not be treated as a substitute for the room’s visual or other appropriate fire-alarm warning arrangements.

Two straightforward questions help during design and handover:

A clear result in the front row only confirms performance at that position. Formal induction-loop commissioning should use representative test points across the complete intended listening area, including different rows, sides and changes in floor level.

At each position, the field-strength meter is held vertically at the correct listening height. Testing should cover magnetic background noise, field strength and frequency response—not simply whether sound can be heard.

The actual microphones and audio feeds should also be checked. Live speech provides an important final listening assessment but does not replace the measured commissioning results required by IEC 60118-4.

A help point is a two-way communication system. The passenger speaks through its microphone, while the operator’s reply returns through the loudspeaker.

Where an induction loop is fitted, that incoming voice can also be transmitted directly to a compatible hearing aid or cochlear implant using its telecoil or T-setting. This can make an important difference in a busy station with announcements, trains and surrounding conversations.

Testing should cover both directions. Confirm that the operator can hear the caller, then use a loop listener at the normal user position to check that the reply is clear through the hearing loop.

Professional testing should also assess magnetic background noise, field strength and frequency response in accordance with IEC 60118-4. A visible loop symbol is helpful, but the complete help-point system still needs to work when somebody requires assistance.

The ear-and-T symbol shows that a hearing loop is available and tells users with a compatible hearing aid or cochlear implant to select their loop programme or T-setting.

For a counter or localised listening point, the sign should be easy to see and positioned where the service is available. If coverage is limited to a specific area, users should not have to guess where to stand or sit.

A sign alone does not prove the system is working. Staff should know how to check the complete audio path with a loop listener, while professional testing verifies the installation’s performance against IEC 60118-4.

A counter induction loop can support one-to-one conversations during check-in. In an accessible bedroom, the design may also need to consider television listening support, subtitles, clear user instructions and how a deaf guest will be alerted during an emergency.

A room hearing loop can deliver television audio to compatible hearing aids and implants through their telecoil or “T” programme. An illuminated indicator can help staff confirm that the loop is carrying audio.

That system does not replace a visual or vibrating fire-alarm alert. Emergency warning and evacuation arrangements should be planned separately through the hotel’s fire-risk assessment and access strategy.

Why can a school hall hearing loop be switched on but still sound unclear?

A hearing loop can only transmit the audio it receives. A strong magnetic field cannot compensate for a poor, noisy or missing audio source.

This real hall installation includes a clearly labelled line input. It allows suitable audio from the hall’s mixer or PA system to be routed to the induction-loop amplifier.

For assemblies, performances and presentations, every microphone or playback source that needs to be heard must reach that feed. A poorly positioned room microphone may collect more reverberation, movement and audience noise than useful speech.

Operational checks should use the hall’s actual microphones and equipment. Professional commissioning then verifies background magnetic noise, field strength and frequency response throughout the listening area in accordance with IEC 60118-4.
