Ever been handed a security report that somehow creates more questions than answers?

For a busy business owner, a long list of findings is only useful if you know what to do first. A practical security audit should turn each issue into:

• a clear priority
• a named owner
• an achievable action
• a date to review it

That gives your team a sensible plan: deal with the biggest risks first, schedule the rest, and keep progress visible without drowning everyone in technical language.

An employee overseas hits an IT problem. Suddenly they are messaging three different people, nobody is sure who owns it, and the working day starts slipping away.

Your travelling staff and international contractors should not have to work out the support chain themselves.

Give them one clear route for help, a named owner, a simple escalation path, and a documented way to bring in trusted local hands when something needs attention on site. That removes the guesswork and helps the right person take charge sooner.

If your team works across countries or time zones, see what a clearer support setup can look like:

“Can you just let me onto your laptop quickly?”

When someone is working away from the office and needs help now, an unexpected link or a new remote-access tool can feel like the quickest answer. It can also leave nobody quite sure who was given access, why, or whether it was removed afterwards.

Before remote support begins, make four quick checks:

• Did the request come through your usual approved support route?
• Does the employee know who is connecting and what they need to do?
• Is the device up to date and protected before access is allowed?
• Will the access be limited to this job and ended when the work is finished?

The practical outcome is simple: the problem gets fixed, your colleague gets back to work, and remote access stays controlled rather than becoming a permanent open door.

If remote support has grown informally as your team has expanded, we can help you make it clear, practical and secure. Find out more:

A green backup dashboard can be reassuring, but it does not answer the question that matters: could your business get its files back when it needs them?

A simple restore test turns that assumption into something useful. Pick a small, representative set of files and record:

• the date of the test
• what you restored and where you restored it
• how long the restore took
• whether the files opened correctly
• any issue found, who owns the fix, and when it will be tested again

You do not need to create drama or test everything at once. Start with the files your team would need first if normal access stopped.

The practical outcome is a backup process you have actually tested, plus a clear record of what worked and what still needs attention.

Ever arrived on Monday morning to find a laptop demanding an update, a backup that has not completed, or a storage warning everyone hoped would disappear?

Before you finish for Friday, give your business IT five minutes:

• Check that important updates are installed or scheduled, rather than waiting to interrupt Monday morning.
• Confirm your latest backup completed successfully. A green tick is useful; knowing when it last ran is better.
• Look for low-storage warnings on the devices and shared services your team relies on.
• Note any unresolved support issues, with an owner and a clear next action.

You are not trying to fix everything at 4:55pm. You are making sure small warning signs are visible before they become Monday's first problem.

The practical outcome is a calmer start to the week, with fewer avoidable surprises waiting for your team.

If those quick checks uncover more than you expected, Hamblett Consultancy can help you get the basics under control. See how we support growing businesses:

Every week, someone on the team copies figures from one place to another, chases missing updates and turns it all into a summary. Everybody dislikes it, but because it is familiar, it stays manual.

That routine task is often a better place to start with automation than the flashy idea.

Look for a job that:

• happens the same way each week
• has clear inputs and a clear finish
• is easy to check when something looks unusual
• keeps a person in charge before anything is approved or sent

Start small. Time the task, write down the steps and choose one part to automate. The aim is less chasing, fewer missed steps and a weekly process that is easier to manage.

Which recurring admin job would your team be happiest to stop doing by hand?

When a client asks, “Can you handle this too?”, it is easy to say yes and sort out the details later. That is often when updates get crossed, responsibilities blur and the client starts wondering who is actually in charge.

A clean white-label handover keeps things simple:

• Agree who owns the client conversation.
• Share the scope, key contacts and any known risks before work starts.
• Set one clear route for updates and escalation.
• Confirm how the work will be handed back when it is complete.

The practical outcome is extra technical capacity when you need it, while your client still has one clear, consistent relationship with you.

At around 10am on 6 October, ASOS says an unauthorised customer notification was sent. The company is investigating unauthorised activity involving third-party platforms used to communicate with customers.

ASOS says basic personal information, including names and contact details, may have been accessed. It does not currently believe payment-card information or account passwords were affected. Its website and app remain operational while the investigation continues.

This is not a reason to speculate or blame ASOS before the facts are known. It is a reminder that cyber risk does not stop at your own network boundary.

Every organisation relies on cloud services, suppliers, apps and integrations. Any of those connections can widen the attack surface. No business can remove cyber risk completely—but every business can make an incident harder to cause and easier to contain.

Good basics matter:

• MFA on cloud, admin and communications platforms
• least-privilege access and prompt removal of old accounts
• regular patching and security monitoring
• supplier-risk checks and clear incident contacts
• tested backups and an incident-response plan
• staff awareness, especially for phishing after a public breach

Cyber security is not about promising that nothing will ever happen. It is about reducing the likelihood, limiting the impact and recovering well.

If you are unsure how your business would detect, contain and recover from a cyber incident, Hamblett Consultancy can help you review your controls, suppliers, backups and response plan.

Ever been on a project call where every supplier is waiting for somebody else to make the decision?

A migration or office move can have a detailed plan and still stall when nobody is clearly responsible for the choices that join everything together.

Three simple things help keep it moving:

• Name one person who owns the technical decisions across the whole project.
• Keep a short decision log showing what was agreed, who agreed it and when.
• Use a handover checklist so every supplier knows what they need to deliver, and what they are waiting to receive.

The practical outcome is fewer circular conversations, quicker decisions and a smoother handover for your team.

If an upcoming IT project needs clearer ownership, we can help you bring the moving parts together. Have a straightforward conversation with us:
