Do you use Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Dropbox?

Why don't you add as many different products as you can?

One good reason is that your business will end up with the two C's.

You don't want the two C's. Why would any sensible business owner want the two C's?

Pick a product - Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and throw yourself into it.

Use every feature and reduce your cost and complexity.

Where does my trust come from?

The same happens in Cyber Security. We automatically trust certain networks and don't trust others.

But there is a new kind of Cyber Security strategy and it's called Zero Trust.

President Biden has issued an executive order saying that all government departments must implement zero trust security.

If it's good enough for the President, it should be good enough for your small business.

So why don't you look at implementing Zero Trust security in your business?

Have you ever been robbed?

But does that mean these things will never happen... No.

The past doesn't predict the future.

Your might never have had a or IT downtime lasting a week.

It doesn't mean they won't happen. We always have to prepare for things that have never happened.

On the 26th February, we'll finally see Newcastle United win something. And who knows? We might celebrate with a pull-up.

Cyber Essentials? Don't renew it. Save your cash.

Your firewall security subscription? Downgrade it, it doesn't seem to do anything anyway.

MFA? Turn it off. Pain in the jacks.

When it comes to Cyber Security in general, be an ostrich.

In my experience, businesses take cyber security seriously for one of three reasons..

➡️They've had a major attack. We've started working with some companies who are in the middle of a ransomware outage. Businesses will spend whatever it takes for this to never happen again

➡️They've had a scare. Might be an email mailbox compromise. It was sorted pretty quickly, but it can't happen again. It was embarrassing to admit what happened to clients.

➡️Forward-thinking businesses. They understand that this Information security stuff is big. They'll have a plan in place to invest in their defenses and a plan in place in case anything happens.... because it probably will.

If you want to know why you might need a firewall in your business, think about drinking water.

Water?

Yes, we could drink out of the river. It's water, isn't it? But it might not be clean. We might get a stomach ache.

This is a bit like not having a firewall at all.

Or we could drink out of the tap at home. That's much better. The water has been cleaned.

This is a little bit like using a Draytek firewall or a BT/Sky Home Hub.

So why do so many people spend money on water filters?

They put the clean tap water into a water filter and then drink the filtered water.

They do that so more of the bad stuff will be filtered out. The water is the cleanest it can be.

This is a bit like having a firewall with a monthly security subscription, like a WatchGuard.

It offers more protection.

But whatever you do, don't go drinking out of the river.
