As of approximately 3.30am on Monday, 16th March, we understand that there was a subsea fibre break to the North Isles (Westray) affecting the distribution of fibre and communications for the North Isles.
We have rerouted our wireless radio customers over our backup links whilst we work with the cable operators to determine the issues. Unfortunately there are some of our fibre customers that we cannot reroute due to the nature of the break.
We will keep you informed of this unfortunate situation through Facebook.
This is a similar issue to the one that occurred when the subsea cable was damaged in December 2020.

**Service Update**

We wanted to keep you informed with the latest update on the service restoration.

The specialist cable repair vessel is now scheduled to depart Dunkirk later today, which means its arrival on-site has been delayed slightly. Once on location, repairs will begin right away, weather permitting.

With this change, we now expect service to be fully restored between Wednesday, August 6, and Thursday, August 7.

We’re sorry for the delay and truly appreciate your continued patience.

A specialist cable repair vessel has been mobilised and is expected to arrive on-site by Wednesday, July 30. Once on location, repair operations will begin immediately, weather permitting. Based on current assessments, we anticipate service will be fully restored between Sunday evening (August 3) and Monday (August 4).

As you are aware, internet service is currently back up and running however we are operating on our failover link off-island, which will remain in use until the primary subsea connection is fully restored. During this time, some customers may experience reduced performance or degradation in service due to the limited capacity of the backup link.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

Please see below Radio Orkney's post with regards the problems to internet and phone access to various internet providers affecting both Orkney and Shetland. This is a major problem and work is being undertaken to resolve as quickly as possible. We are providing internet but it is at a degraded service whilst this situation is ongoing.

Internet and phone services in Orkney, Shetland and Faroe are being affected by damage to a subsea cable which happened around 3am between Orkney and Banff on the north east coast.

SUNDAY UPDATE: SEE OUR UPDATED STORY ON FACEBOOK AND BBC NEWS ONLINE. Openreach is revising its initial estimate of customers affected down from 10,000 to “hundreds”.

An Openreach spokesperson told BBC Radio Orkney “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience, the damage to a subsea cable from Orkney to Banff, has caused from Saturday morning. Customers can still make landline calls, and whilst we’re constantly assessing customer impact, we believe up to 10,000 customers in Faroe, Shetland and Orkney islands could have disruption to their broadband services.

We’re working on repairs as soon as we can and will update further once we can confirm our specific work and timeline. Anyone experiencing any issues should report it to their service provider for further investigation as usual.“

The cable which has been damaged is the
Shefa-2 cable which which is owned by Faroese Telecom. It was last damaged 3 years ago, in what was thought to be an accident involving a fishing vessel.

999 calls are not impacted but the switchboard at Orkney’s Balfour hospital is currently down, with patients asked to call this mobile number instead 07795453757.

We are told providing timescales for full repair of the cable is difficult due to wind, wave and tidal conditions needing to be assessed before any work can take place. .

We are experiencing problems with our off-island upstream provider. This has been logged with them and they have confirmed they are aware of it and are working to resolve the issue. We will keep you updated as and when we receive updates from them. Sorry for the inconvenience this may be causing.
