Tip #31: The best tip? Don't do it alone. The case is never closed, the next threat is always lurking.

For the past 31 days, we've investigated the methods, motives, and evidence of the digital crime scene. We've shown that cybersecurity isn't a one-time fix; it's an ongoing investigation.
The threat landscape is constantly evolving. The criminals never rest. And while these tips will make you significantly safer, the ultimate defence is having a dedicated team of experts on your side.

As Cyber Security Awareness Month ends, our investigation continues. We are your 24/7 digital detectives, your strategic advisors, and your first responders. If you're ready to have a true security partner watching your back, let's close the case on your cyber-anxiety.

Tip #30: Don't get hooked by a text message.

"Smishing" (SMS phishing) attacks have surged in the UK, with millions of fraudulent texts sent every day, often impersonating trusted brands like the Post Office, DPD, or your bank.

Real-Life Scenario: You receive a text message that says: "Your Royal Mail parcel has a £2.99 shipping fee. To reschedule your delivery, please visit [malicious link]." The link leads to a convincing fake website designed to steal your credit card details and personal information.

Prevention Tip: Treat unexpected text messages with the same suspicion as emails. Never click links in a text from an unknown or unexpected source. If you want to check the status of a delivery or a bank alert, manually go to the company's official website or app yourself. Do not use the link they provided.

Tip #29: Curiosity can be a catastrophe.

Studies have shown that a "lost" USB stick has a nearly 50% chance of being picked up and plugged into a computer by a curious employee.

Real-Life Scenario: An employee finds a USB stick in the company car park. Hoping to find the owner, they plug it into their work laptop. The screen flickers for a moment. They see nothing on the drive, assume it's broken, and forget about it. They don't realise they have just installed malware that is now silently spreading across the company network.

Prevention Tip: Never, ever plug a found or unsolicited USB stick into a company device. Treat all unknown removable media as hostile. If you find one, do not plug it in. Instead, give it to your IT department or security partner, who have isolated "sandboxed" systems to safely investigate it.

Tip #28: Don't forget the data hiding in plain sight.

Over 80% of an organisation's data is "unstructured"—meaning it's sitting in Word documents, spreadsheets, and shared drives, often without proper security controls.

Real-Life Scenario: An attacker gains access to a single, seemingly unimportant file server. On it, they find a forgotten spreadsheet from three years ago titled "Customer Passwords" containing hundreds of live credentials.

Prevention Tip: Your unstructured data is a goldmine for attackers. Implement clear access controls, conduct regular data audits to find and delete old, unnecessary files, and ensure these data stores are included in your secure backup strategy.

Tip #27: Education Focus - Embrace AI, but do it responsibly.

The use of AI tools in UK schools is growing rapidly, but so are concerns about data privacy, plagiarism, and student safety.

Real-Life Scenario: A school embraces a new AI learning tool without vetting its security. It's later discovered that the tool is harvesting student data, creating a massive safeguarding and compliance issue.

Prevention Tip: Establish clear policies and update your safeguarding procedures specifically for Artificial Intelligence. This involves creating an AI Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), aligning your data protection policies, and developing a plan for AI integration. Outline for staff and students what is allowed and what is not. Crucially, it involves having a formal vetting process to ensure any new AI tool is secure and compliant before it is introduced to the classroom. This framework enables you to leverage the benefits of AI while actively managing and mitigating the associated risks.

Tip #26: You're only as secure as your least secure partner.

The UK Government has warned that just 14% of businesses assess the cyber risks posed by their immediate suppliers.

Real-Life Scenario: A local firm has excellent security. However, their accounting partner has a weak password on their network. Criminals breach the accountants, then use their legitimate connection to "piggyback" into the larger firm's network.

Prevention Tip: Make cybersecurity a part of your procurement process. Ask your key suppliers if they are Cyber Essentials certified. This ensures they have essential security controls in place, protecting their network and, in turn, protecting yours.

Tip #25: Our new blog is live! The investigation never ends.

As Cyber Security Awareness Month draws to a close, it's easy to think the job is done. But the threat landscape is always evolving.

In our final campaign blog post, we explore why cybersecurity must be treated as an ongoing investigation, not a one-time fix. We look at the proactive steps you need to take to stay ahead of the criminals, year-round.

Tip #24: Your password is just the first lock on the door.

Using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) blocks 99.9% of all automated cyber attacks, even if a criminal has your correct password.

Real-Life Scenario: A criminal buys an employee's leaked password from the dark web. They try to log into the company's Microsoft 365 account. Because the company has MFA enabled, the criminal is stopped in their tracks when they are asked for a six-digit code from a device they don't have.

Prevention Tip: Enable Multi-Factor Authentication on every account that offers it. It's a free, simple layer of defence that acts as a second lock, requiring a code from your phone to prove it's really you. It is the single most effective security step you can take.

Tip #23: The simplest crimes are often physical.

A significant number of data breaches begin not with a complex hack, but with simple physical access to an unattended, unlocked computer.

Real-Life Scenario: An employee walks away from their desk to take a phone call, leaving their computer unlocked. A malicious actor sits down and, in less than 30 seconds, plugs in a USB stick that installs keylogging software.

Prevention Tip: Lock your screen every single time you walk away from your device, no matter how briefly. Use Windows Key + L or Cmd + Control + Q. It's a simple, two-second habit that eliminates a massive physical security risk.

Tip #22: Don't mistake a collection of tools for a strategy.

This week we've investigated the big picture: making security a board-level priority, creating response plans, and managing access. It can feel overwhelming.

A strong security posture isn't about buying every tool; it's about building a strategic roadmap that combines technology, policies, and people. It's your blueprint for a resilient organisation, covering everything from Cyber Essentials certification to your long-term disaster recovery plan.

If you're unsure what your next strategic step should be, let's build that roadmap together. Book a complimentary, no-obligation security consultation today.
