The Truth About the Cloud

When people hear "the cloud", they often imagine their data floating around somewhere in the sky. The reality is very different.

The cloud is simply a network of highly secure data centres that store your files, emails, applications, and backups. In fact, your data is often safer in the cloud than on a laptop sitting under a desk.

Using cloud based applications you can access your files from anywhere, automatically back up important data and collaborate with colleagues in real time. You can also benefit from enterprise-grade security and monitoring and reduce the risk of data loss from device failure.

But here's the truth many businesses overlook:

Moving to the cloud isn't automatically secure.

Strong passwords, multi-factor authentication (MFA), regular monitoring, staff awareness training, and sensible access controls are all essential to keeping your cloud environment protected.

I thought I would share this post as it touches a subject I was discussing at a networking event a few week's ago.

It is not uncommon now for businesses to take out cyber insurance, ourselves included.

However, having insurance does not mean you do not need to worry about the important security controls you should already have in place.

Your cyber insurance may not pay out — even with an active policy. ⚠️

Insurers are denying claims when these controls weren't in place:
→ Enforced MFA (the #1 denial reason)
→ Patch management
→ Tested backups that actually restore
→ Documented security awareness training

Read your policy BEFORE you need it. A denied claim is worse than no policy.

Myth: More Bars on Wi‑Fi Means Faster Internet

Wi‑Fi bars only show the strength of the signal between your device and your router. They don't measure your actual internet speed.

Even with a full signal, your connection can still feel slow because of:

Internet provider issues
Network congestion
Too many devices connected
Background downloads or updates
An older router

Quick Tip: If your internet feels sluggish, run a speed test before blaming the Wi‑Fi signal. The issue may not be your wireless connection at all.

Deepfake Scams: Could Your Staff Spot One?

In 2024, an employee at a global engineering firm was tricked into transferring $25 million after joining a video call with what appeared to be senior company executives. Every person on the call was actually an AI-generated deepfake. It almost sounds impossible but unfortunately it is true:

As AI technology improves, criminals are no longer relying solely on fake emails. They can now clone voices, create realistic video calls, and impersonate trusted colleagues.

Imagine receiving:
A voicemail from your Managing Director asking for an urgent payment.
A video call from a client requesting sensitive information.
A voice note from a colleague asking you to reset a password.

It might not be them but how can you tell?

We would suggest verifying an unexpected payment or data request through a separate communication channel. Start training staff to question unexpected messages, even from familiar voices and implement approval processes.

Sadly, just as we are all starting to get good at spotting the phishing emails cyber security has evolved.

Tech Tip: Don't Store Important Files Only on Your Desktop

Is your desktop full of important documents, spreadsheets, photos, and customer files?

While it might be convenient, storing important files only on your desktop can be risky. If your computer fails, is lost, stolen, or hit by ransomware, those files could disappear in an instant.

Always store files in OneDrive, SharePoint, or another cloud backup solution

Think of your desktop as a workspace, not a filing cabinet.
