Computers - New Lease of Life

Computers - New Lease of Life PC Security, Laptop and desktop repairs specialising in re-builds, data recovery, helping you save money and stay safe. Giving your PC a New Lease of Life!

I have been messing about with computers since 1989, repairing them since 1995, working in the outsourcing industry since 2003 and a security analyst since 2010. I see high street vendors charging over the odds for rebuilding computers with people willing to pay silly prices for basic work. More worryingly I see people throwing away perfectly good hardware and spending HUNDREDS of pounds on new ha

rdware that they really didn't need. In today's world of online threats, malware and the on-the-rise Ransom-ware and Scare-ware holding your computer hostage, I look to provide the average computer user with a service which saves them money and helps educate about and protect against online threats.

!!!You must pay £100 to access your own photos, documents and videos!!!

Sounds far fetched, but this is one of the fastest rising types of malware out there.

The scariest aspect of this is that even if you were to pay the ransom, you will not be able to access your files. I have already seen this malware in actions and you CANNOT decrypt them, you must restore from backup.

*Golden Rule* - Do NOT ever open links or attachments in email that you are not expecting - no matter how 'real' they look.

*Improve Resilience/Recovery from this attack*
- Make sure your Antivirus is updated *at least* daily!
- Backup data you cannot afford to lose to an external Harddrive (make sure you unplug it after copying files). These can be bought from many online retailers for as cheap as their internal versions. High street vendors will charge you a significant markup on external drives. Prices starting at around ~£35 which is a small price to pay to secure such files as 'precious memory' photos an videos.

Tens of millions of UK internet users could be at risk from "ransom" email spam that appears to be sent from financial institutions, police warn.

Do you use internet explorer?

A new vulnerability has recently been discovered which is currently being exploited by online criminal networks.

Are you at risk?

Top Tips to stay safer:
- DO NOT open attachments in emails unless you were expecting the email and attachment.
- Make sure your Antivirus is up to date and check for updates several times over the coming week.
- Consider switching to a different web browser such as Firefox or Google chrome and avoid using Internet Explorer.

Remember - If you suspect you have been infected, you can contact New Lease of Life by PM for more information or to arrange for the computer to be cleaned (where possible) or rebuilt (data recovery can be arranged).

There are literally hundreds of different visual styles (skins) for the common scare-ware and ransom-ware programs and these are just a very small example. They look reasonable legitimate at first glance though there are usually tell tale signs giving the game away.
