“What’s that grey box on my wall?”

It’s where your full fibre arrives at your home. The fibre cable comes from the street, either down from a telegraph pole or up from underground, and finishes in that grey box. Inside it, our engineer joins it to a second fibre cable, which goes through a small 10mm hole in your wall and into the house.

Indoors, that cable plugs into a small box called the ONT (optical network terminal). The ONT turns the light signal coming down the fibre into something your router can use, and the router does the Wi-Fi bit.

So the grey box is basically the front door for your broadband. It protects the join where the cable reaches your home, which helps stop problems further down the line.

Best thing to do with it? Leave it be.

2.4GHz or 5GHz? What's the difference?

Your router has two Wi-Fi bands and they're both good at different things.

Think of them as two runners. 5GHz is the sprinter. Quick off the mark and better over shorter distances.

2.4GHz is the marathon runner. Not quite as speedy, but it goes further and handles walls a little better.

The good news? You don't usually need to worry about choosing between them. Your router and devices generally sort that out for you.

But sometimes, a gadget needs a little help. Some smart home devices, like doorbell cameras and older bits of tech, only support 2.4GHz. Which might explain why something's refusing to connect.

And if that's happening, we've got you covered. You can set up a separate Wi-Fi network yourself through the GoFibre app if you've got one of our Standard or Advanced routers.

And if you'd rather leave the technical bits to us, that's okay too, give our lovely Customer Support team a call on 0800 059 0980. They can sort it remotely, so you don't have to fiddle with any settings.

🚧GREENLAW🚧

Parking suspension will be in place, but the road remains open.

L3 Optics (on behalf of GoFibre) will be carrying out works on the main road through Greenlaw (A697), from 42 East High Street, Greenlaw, TD10 6UF to 3 Edinburgh Road, Greenlaw, TD10 6XF.

Works will take place from 12 October to 16 October, between 08:00 and 17:00 each day.

Parking will be temporarily suspended along the affected section of road. We kindly ask that vehicles are not parked within the signed suspension area during the dates and times shown.

The footway will also be temporarily closed in sections while works are taking place. Clearly signed pedestrian diversion routes will be provided to maintain safe passage.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout the period.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we deliver our full fibre connection to Greenlaw, and thank you for your patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out.
