📖 Print Word of the Week: Bleed

Ever had a print come back with a slim white line round the edge? That's a missing bleed.

When we trim your printed sheets, the blade can shift by a fraction of a millimetre. Extending your background colours and images 3mm past the edge means any tiny movement just trims off extra design, not blank paper.

✅ Rule of thumb: add 3mm bleed on every edge.

Ever wondered why a print job that takes five days in June can take so much longer in November? 🤔

It's not the printer being slow. In the last few months of the year, every stage of a job builds up its own queue: getting artwork approved, sourcing paper, press time, finishing and delivery. In quieter months those stages overlap nicely. In Q4, the queues stack up.

The good news is that most of the problems are avoidable if you plan now rather than later. A few things worth doing:

📄 Check your paper stock early, especially heavier boards, coloured or textured papers
✨ Book any foiling, die cutting or embossing in good time
📦 Get packaging, presentation boxes, display work and direct mail booked first
🔁 Think about reprints now, as topping up in December is much harder than printing in October
🗓️ Work backwards from the date your print needs to be doing its job, not just the delivery date

Christmas is the busiest retail window of the year, and the print that supports it only earns its keep if it lands in store on time.

Here's a rough timeline for a store campaign going live in late November:

🎄August to September: agree the campaign, the range of items and rough quantities. Start artwork.

🎄Late September to early October: sign off designs and proofs, confirm print specs and finishes.

🎄October: print and finish, then hold stock ready to ship.

🎄Early to mid November: pick, pack and deliver to each store, timed to a set install date.

The retailers who get the most from Christmas start early and treat print as one planned campaign, not a scramble in November.
