If you were breached, who would you call first?
It’s 11pm on a Friday. Someone on your team notices files being encrypted on a shared drive.
What happens next?
a: Who gets the first call, and do they have that person’s mobile number, or only their work email, which may already be locked?
b: Who has the authority to take systems offline, and would they do it without waiting for a meeting?
c: Does anyone know which customers or partners you’d have to notify, and how quickly?
d: Is your incident plan printed or stored somewhere outside the systems it’s meant to protect?
Most organisations have an answer to “are we protected?” Far fewer have one for “what do we do in the first hour?” The first hour is when an incident either stays contained or turns into a crisis.
The plan doesn’t need to be long. It needs names, numbers, decision rights and one practice run. A plan nobody has rehearsed tends to fall apart when it’s actually needed.
So, if it happened tonight, how confident are you that everyone would know their part?
